Michigan returns to its roots against Penn State
In its toughest test to date, Michigan plays "Bully Ball" and comes away with a significant victory
Michigan stands unbeaten this year with a 10-0 record after a momentous 24-15 victory over Penn State on Saturday.
Michigan received assistance from numerous individuals in conquering adversity and acing its toughest test of the season. Today, we'll be talking about the standout performers in a game characterized by Penn State's offensive struggles and Michigan's return to their traditional style.
After improving to 10-0 and inching closer to their third consecutive Big Ten title game, the Wolverines have been on the hunt for a dependable rushing attack that mirrors their formidable run game from 2021 and 2022.
Despite the suspension of Jim Harbaugh, the offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore led the third-ranked Michigan team to a 24-15 win over the Nittany Lions, effectively ending their chances of claiming the Big Ten East title in Happy Valley.
Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards
One of the main points of discussion during this game revolved around the remarkable ability of Penn State to effectively shut down the opponent's running plays. The defense of the Nittany Lions proved to be exceptional, as they only allowed an average of 60.6 rushing yards per game, which is quite impressive. On the other hand, the Wolverines' running game has noticeably declined when compared to the previous season.
As the stage was meticulously set, the question lingered in the air - which team would ultimately emerge victorious and break the tension? The outstanding efficiency of both Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards made Michigan's impressive rushing performance of 227 yards on 46 carries possible.
The running game was strong in the last game, with Corum leading the way by rushing for 145 yards and finding the end zone twice, and Edwards also making his presence felt with 52 yards and a touchdown. In the second quarter, during a touchdown drive, Corum showcased his skills with a remarkable 44-yard run. At the same time, Edwards added to the excitement with a 22-yard touchdown, fulfilling the expectations of the fans who were eagerly anticipating this dynamic duo.
Michigan's ability to effectively run the ball played a crucial role in their offensive success against a formidable Penn State defense. Looking ahead, Michigan will need to continue relying on their run game as they face upcoming challenges, including a game against Maryland next weekend and a highly anticipated match against the top-ranked Ohio State on November 25th.
Rod Moore and Makari Paige
The exceptional games played by safeties Rod Moore and Makari Paige were truly remarkable. In terms of tackles, both members of the duo made a significant impact, recording six each. Both Moore and Paige have been performing exceptionally well in recent games, and their contributions were crucial in today's contest. They played a significant role in containing Penn State's ground attack and minimizing their impact on the game.
In this game, both of them made substantial plays that cannot be overlooked. In the second quarter, Moore made a significant impact by correctly analyzing a screen pass and swiftly moving forward to tackle Penn State's Malick Meiga, resulting in a loss for their team. Not only did Paige excel in the earlier parts of the game, but he also showed his skills in the third quarter by recovering a fumble from Drew Allar. The recovery of that fumble proved to be crucial in setting up a successful eight-minute drive that resulted in a field goal.
Kenneth Grant
The Michigan defensive line has consistently earned recognition for its depth, allowing them to interchange players without compromising their convincing performance. Although Kenneth Grant was not receiving much attention at the start of the season, he has consistently performed well throughout the entire year. Grant once again proved to be instrumental in Michigan's ability to stifle Penn State, and Saturday was no different.
He finished with four tackles, and one of those tackles came early when it looked like Penn State was finally gaining some offensive momentum. Penn State running back Kaytron Allen found a hole and burst through the Michigan secondary before being tracked down by the 339-pound Grant. You don’t see that kind of size and movement every day, and Grant used it to help prevent a touchdown.
Sherrone Moore
Although it may not have been Michigan's most flashy or pristine performance of the season, Sherrone Moore deserves immense recognition for his exceptional efforts in this game. As news broke of Jim Harbaugh's suspension late on Friday afternoon and rumors regarding his participation in the game continued to circulate on Saturday morning, the team faced the urgent task of making necessary adjustments and still managing to compete (and emerge triumphant) in the game. Despite the challenges, Moore showed resilience by answering the bell and playing a crucial role in leading the team to victory.
After the game, Moore had a conversation with FOX sideline reporter Jenny Taft, in which he discussed the significance of securing the victory. During the interview, his emotions were clearly on display, illustrating the immense significance of today's win for both Harbaugh and the university. It remains uncertain as to whether Moore will continue in a leadership position, but he has demonstrated his undeniable capability to assume that role if necessary.
