With less than 100 days until the season begins, I’m continuing this series, highlighting offensive and defensive players to watch during the offseason for each Group of Five program. Many people, including fans, aren’t aware of some overlooked players, often referred to as diamonds in the rough. Get ready for an enjoyable journey.

Continuing with our series, we will now shift our attention to the American Athletic Conference and, specifically, the USF Bulls, led by head coach Alex Golesh in his second season. During his initial season at South Florida, Golesh orchestrated the most remarkable transformation in the history of the USF program, achieving a 7-6 record and securing a resounding 45-0 victory against Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl. This achievement came after the Bulls had endured a dismal 1-11 season. The impressive improvement of six wins was the second-largest in FBS football during the 2023 season, and it culminated in the biggest shutout victory ever recorded in NCAA bowl history.

“A year ago, there were no expectations,” Golesh said during a press conference. “It felt that all we were worried about was us and our process.” 

The days of having no expectations have dissipated. In just 15 months on campus, the entire attitude around the program has changed. 

Now, USF has grabbed the attention of the national media, enough for one analyst to project them in next year’s expanded College Football Playoffs. 

Keep your focus on this particular player.

Quarterback–Byrum Brown

Currently, Byrum Brown is anticipated to be the starting quarterback once again. Brown achieved a milestone in his first year as a redshirt freshman, becoming the first USF player to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season. He ended the season with a total of 3,292 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Brown’s running abilities were also impressive, as he rushed for more than 1,000 yards and led the team.

It’s that dual-threat ability that makes him such a dangerous threat on the gridiron. Brown’s running ability sets him apart from all the other quarterbacks on the roster, and in the nation, the best comparison would be Jalen Milroe from Alabama. Brown is explosive. He is capable of doing it physically, and with a year of experience in Golesh’s electric and high-powered offense, I believe you would agree that he will perform even better this year.

Regarding redshirt sophomore quarterback Byrum Brown, there are numerous adjectives that can be used to characterize him.

Leader. Winner. Adroit. Humble. Captivating. Electric.

As many are aware, Brown had a remarkable debut season as a redshirt freshman. If one negative thing had to be focused on, it would be his size. He had a physique that some would describe as lanky or slender, which could be a risky combination in college football. What actions did Brown take? Over the offseason, he added 15 pounds to his weight and now stands at a strong 220 pounds.

“I feel good,’’ Brown said. “I feel comfortable. I can’t wait to get out there and play.’’

Only two quarterbacks, Byrum Brown and Jayden Daniels, achieved the impressive feat of throwing for 3,000 yards and rushing for 800 yards last season. Jayden Daniels, the Heisman Trophy winner from LSU, was one of them. Without a doubt, Brown has set a high bar, leaving USF fans eagerly waiting to see what he can achieve this season.

“Byrum is his own biggest critic,’’ Golesh said. “He spent so much time here (football facility) in January and February. We joke about it and call him ‘Coach Brown.’ He’s literally here all day after he goes to class.’’

It’s safe to say by a longshot that Brown isn’t just going to stay stagnant. He has the mentality of getting better day by day, and that is a player you want on your team. That type of mentality and focus can intoxicate the rest of the team.

“He’s as critical of himself as anybody, which makes him super easy to coach,’’ Golesh said. “I think of all the things he did really well. He’ll tell you, ‘Man, the 11 interceptions … I’ve got to clean that up. The fumbles … I’ve got to clean that up.”

The Backstory

As Byrum Brown led Rolesville (N.C.) High School to the state championship game through a record-breaking senior year, Power Five schools weren’t calling. He engaged in discussions with North Carolina, NC State, and Wake Forest, but there was little genuine interest in the potential. According to Rolesville head coach Rainer Rackley, there were doubts among schools about Brown’s ability to throw long passes, leading them to see him as more of a quarterback who relies on running.

However, South Florida remained persistent in their recruitment efforts. USF quality control coach Sawyer Jordan learned about Brown through Malik Frazier, the wide receivers coach at Brown’s high school.

During his unofficial visit to USF in 2022, Brown expressed that it had a genuine feel to it. They guided him through Tampa, Florida, and had him meet with some graduate assistants. Brown’s exceptional performance in executing a 20-yard out route led to an instant offer from former head coach Jeff Scott.

A few weeks later, Brown took an official visit with his mother. They went to Ocean Prime, a seafood restaurant where Brown indulged in a spread of shellfish, crabs, shrimp, lobster, and oysters. He was sold.

“I knew I just needed an opportunity,” Brown said. “My parents said, whatever school gives you the opportunity, just go out there and make every other school in the country wish they offered you.”

The rest is history. Brown has proven to himself, the other players, and coaches alike that he is the foundation of this team, and the team will go how he goes. If healthy, this team has a high chance of being one of the G5 teams that make it into the College Football Playoffs as it expands to a 12-team playoff.

What’s the outlook for USF?

The Bulls had only won four games in three seasons before Alex Golesh joined last offseason. Golesh quickly turned things around, leading South Florida to a 7-6 record and their first bowl victory in six years. With Byrum Brown as a consistent presence in the offense, the Bulls have the necessary resources to compete in the AAC. The dynamic, dual-threat quarterback exhibits better escapability than any quarterback in college football, and he’s a stellar passer too, churning out four 300-yard performances with a 26-to-11 touchdown to interception ratio. The offense’s major challenge is the overwhelming amount of pressure he encounters. Although South Florida’s offensive line made progress after Brown endured 22 sacks in his first five games, there is still a need for additional refinement in pass protection to establish the Bulls as serious competitors against Tulane and Memphis.

The lineup for the USF Bulls in the coming fall is still undecided, but what is definite is that Byrum Brown will be in charge. With a player of his skill level, it’s no surprise that the Bulls have raised the hopes of both fans and analysts.

Scouting Report

There are a lot of thoughts about this electric prospect, Pro Football Network had plenty to say about Brown. 

Byrum Brown is eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft, but he could ultimately be a 2026 prospect. Still just 19 years old, Brown is coming off a 2023 campaign at South Florida in which he passed for 3,292 yards, 26 TDs, and 11 interceptions while also running for 809 yards and 11 scores.

At around 6’3″, 209 pounds, Brown’s talent pops on film. He’s an explosive, energetic athlete for his size, with a crisp and compact release. Mechanically, there are still ways for him to improve, but he has the raw talent and prototypical ability to fuel an early-round ascent.

On August 31st, the USF Bulls will start their season by playing against Bethune-Cookman.

Fans witnessed an unforgettable moment with Luka Dončić during last night's game between the Mavericks and the Timberwolves, just in case you missed it. Following a thrilling 109-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2, the Dallas Mavericks now hold a 2-0 advantage in the Western Conference finals. Luka Dončić's remarkable game-winning step-back 3-pointer over Rudy Gobert highlighted the game with only three seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Timberwolves led by as many as 18 points before Dallas launched a monumental second-half comeback.

The Mavericks are just two wins shy of reaching the NBA Finals, and they have the advantage of playing their next two games at home. The Mavericks' ability to stage a comeback against the Timberwolves, despite being 18 points down and trailing for most of the game, showcases the team's resolve and composure.

It was evident that Minnesota was fatigued after the halftime break, as Anthony Edwards' scoring dropped to just eight points in the second half compared to his 21-point total. Karl-Anthony Towns had a minimal impact on offense, only scoring 15 points on 4-of-16 shooting. In the final stretch, he found himself on the bench, partly due to his lackluster performance and also because Naz Reid was on fire, shooting 7-for-9 from three-point range and scoring 23 points. Although he couldn't deliver when it mattered the most, his potential game-winning 3-pointer narrowly missed as the buzzer sounded.

Here are a few takeaways from Friday's Game 2.

What can the Wolves do with Luka?

There will be extensive deliberation about Dončić's game-winning shot, particularly regarding the decision to keep Gobert on the court despite the Wolves' plan to switch on all screens. By implementing the scheme, Dončić was able to create a one-on-one situation against the seven-foot player, and the result was evident to everyone. Dončić was utterly unfazed by the four-time Defensive Player of the Year, which is a separate concern altogether.

When Luka possesses the ball in a critical moment, the defense faces a choice: either double-team him or face an inevitable defeat. I strongly believe you can deduce the choice made by the Wolves last night.

Dončić was asked if he was taken aback by the Wolves' choice to switch on the play after the game.

"I was, a little bit, yeah, actually," Dončić said. "I think they were going, like, just no 3s. So, he tried to stay up. But I saw the space, and get to my spot. ... I mean, he's long enough. He can't move — I can't move fast, but I can move faster than him."

In hindsight, it seems evident that the Wolves should have trapped Dončić when he used the screen or that Gobert should not have been on the court during that possession. Throughout the night, the Wolves tried various defensive strategies against Dončić, but they had limited success. When confronted with the blitz, Dončić remained composed, patiently waiting for the ideal opportunity to make a cut or take an open 3-pointer or skillfully execute pinpoint passes.

Dončić created a problematic situation for the defenders when Gobert or other bigs defended the pick-and-roll. He would position himself well, forcing the big to choose between challenging his shot or defending against the lob. It was an incredibly challenging task to contain him, to say the least, and ultimately, Dončić became their downfall.

It's challenging to find a straightforward response against such a talented player, but the Wolves seemed perplexed at moments while attempting to counter Dončić with different defensive tactics. In this series, the Wolves have had two games to devise a plan on how to effectively tackle Dončić. In Game 3, they will likely opt for a default coverage, which they have already employed in the previous games, and utilize it more persistently. They might also sporadically introduce defensive variations to catch Dončić off guard and keep him on his toes.

Ant looks, dare I say, normal

It's challenging to visualize a young and fit 22-year-old getting fatigued, but the considerable responsibilities assigned to Anthony Edwards on offense and defense during three playoff rounds are undeniably exhausting him. He has had to defend several top players, including Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Jamal Murray, and now Kyrie Irving. The situation would usually leave any person breathless, but for someone like Anthony Edwards, who is expected to be superhuman, he appears surprisingly weak and, dare I say, ordinary.

Out of 33 attempts, he has made 11 shots in this series. If you include the seventh game against Denver, the record becomes 17 out of 57. It's clear that he has encountered a significant obstacle, and his entire team won't be able to help him overcome this challenge; he will have to dig deep. He's not getting the shots he wants, and even when he does, Ant is turning down said shots.

"I'm turning down a lot of shots, especially in the mid-range," he said. "I'm just making the right play. Maybe the right play might be just to shoot it."

In a game where the Wolves were understandably desperate for a victory, the Mavericks were trailing by five points with only 66 seconds left on the road. But, with the Wolves up two points and just 12.8 seconds remaining, Edwards, who grew more frustrated as the game went along, eventually lost his composure and tossed a pass into the first row. After that, The Wolves never really had a chance to recover because of the phenom known as Luka Dončić.

The Timberwolves require ANT to tap into his superhuman abilities. He has consistently performed at that level throughout the playoffs. Still, for the Timberwolves to reach the NBA Finals and secure victory in this series, he must tap into his remaining energy.

Gafford and Lively II are a deadly combination

It's hard to embellish how crucial the center combo of Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II has been for the Mavericks this postseason. I don't say this lightly, but they are the twin towers of the playoffs, and it doesn't look like much will prevent them from assuming this role. 

You could say that Friday night's game may have been their best performance to date. They combined for 30 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks, all from Gafford, while continuously being the driving force on the defensive end of the floor. Their length defensively protected the paint from the Wolves' penetration, particularly in the second half, and they repeatedly caught lobs from Dončić and Irving. Gafford and Lively combined for 11 dunks in last night's game.

They both exhibit comparable athleticism and size on the court. When either one or both players are playing, the Mavericks' team gains another dimension. The synergy between Gafford and Lively in Dallas has been flawless, potentially propelling the franchise to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

We'll kick off this series by exploring the Mountain West Conference, where Spencer Danielson is set to lead the Boise State Broncos in his first complete season as head coach.

Around halfway through last season, Danielson took over for Andy Avalos and guided the Broncos to a final record of 8-6, securing their first league championship since 2019. Nevertheless, the previous defensive coordinator will face a challenging task in replicating that accomplishment this year. The upcoming season will bring expanded roles for many of the Broncos' young players on offense and defense.

Running Back - Ashton Jeanty

The running back position has a long and storied history with the Broncos. The group of running backs in Boise State history is as impressive as some of the best. Ashton Jeanty is incredibly gifted. The college football world was stunned when the All-American player revealed his decision to return to Boise State. Jeanty is backed up by a four-star running back in sophomore Breezy Dubar. The team strengthened the roster by adding talented incoming freshmen Dylan Riley and Sire Gaines.

Typically, in an offense that aims for balance, the running back plays a crucial role and carries a significant amount of responsibility, especially when there is a young and inexperienced quarterback. Allow me to present Ashton Jeanty, a Florida native who played high school football in Texas and will seamlessly adapt to Dirk Koetter's offensive system this season. 

In 2023, Jeanty, a sophomore then, received the prestigious honor of being named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. He finished second in the entire FBS, averaging 164.6 all-purpose yards per game. At 5'9" and 210 pounds, Jeanty is already an exciting prospect for the pro game, considering his acceleration, versatility, and overall frame. 

Jeanty had six games where he rushed for over 100 yards, including a remarkable performance of 205 yards and two touchdowns in a victory against San Diego State, as well as an impressive 212 yards and three scores in a close 1-point defeat to Colorado State. Jeanty scored four touchdowns (two rushing and two receiving) against Memphis, but his team lost by three points. Jeanty was a standout player in the Air Force game, with 107 rushing yards, a touchdown, and 118 receiving yards and a score, contributing to a 27-19 win. Moreover, Jeanty scored three rushing touchdowns in the game against North Dakota.

In a remarkable accomplishment, Jeanty became the first FBS player since 2019 to amass 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season. If he stays healthy, Jeanty's draft stock should increase even more between now and the end of the season.

Ashton Jeanty is already zooming up draft boards. Pro Football Focus released their top 50 players in the 2025 NFL Draft Class on Monday. Jeanty was the only player from the Group of Five included on the big board. Jeanty was also the fourth running back included in the list.

Jeanty is undeniably one of the country's most versatile running back prospects. He excels in pass protection and is a valuable asset as a receiver. Jeanty possesses a robust lower body structure, enabling him to power through tackles as a strong, downhill runner. He has the ability to outmaneuver defenders in open areas and then quickly accelerate upfield. The anticipation is that he will be the standout feature back in 2024, surpassing those from the power conferences.

Dirk Koetter, the offensive coordinator for Boise State, draws a comparison between running back Ashton Jeanty and former Bronco Doug Martin, who had a successful seven-year career in the NFL after being drafted 31st overall in 2012.

Former Boise State running backs coach Keith Bhonapha compared Jeanty to a bowling ball because of the way he runs through tacklers. Current running backs coach James Montgomery calls him money.

"He's a sure thing because of how he works," Montgomery said. "The same effort fans see on Saturdays, we see every day on the practice field and in meeting rooms."

I don't think it matters what anyone calls him. Come next April, the coaching staff in Boise knows that there is a legitimate chance that they might be waving goodbye to one of the best running backs to have ever stepped foot onto the campus of Boise State if he resembles what he did last season.

Regarding highly talented prospects, Boise State has a limited selection. He is considered one of the best college football running backs when he is in good health, and it's unlikely that will change this season. Despite being relatively unknown, Ashton Jeanty has the skills to be considered the top RB prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite the lack of national recognition, he is establishing himself as a potential standout among the running backs in Boise State's history, provided he remains until his senior season, at least regarding the record books.

Cedric Minter set the Broncos' career rushing record 44 years ago, accumulating 4,475 yards from 1977-1980. To surpass that record, Jeanty would need to maintain an average of 1,154 yards over the next two seasons, which would be highly probable. A glaring problem stands out to me: this might be Jeanty's last year at Boise State since he may decide to pursue the NFL Draft. Given his status as a top prospect, it would take a combination of factors, including a desirable team to return to and the opportunity for NIL endorsements, to deter him from pursuing a future in the NFL. Jay Ajayi, Jeremy McNichols, and Alexander Mattison all chose to enter the draft early after their junior seasons, as Boise State players in recent history. At this rate, Minter could easily maintain the record for an additional 44 years.

Jeanty's draft value is predicted to increase this season as he showcases his natural leverage, efficiency, and a sense of urgency that grabs the attention of NFL scouts. Not only is he making the scouts drool over him with his downhill acceleration and speed, but it also doesn't hurt his chances. Additionally, there is a high chance that he will be heavily involved in the Heisman race. Whether or not he wins will depend on factors beyond his control, such as his schedule and the team he's on. However, the excitement and anticipation surrounding Jeanty's performance are undeniable, and it seems like there won't be many setbacks on this journey.

The 2024 season for Boise State will kick off on August 31st with a game against Georgia Southern.

The spring practices have concluded. There are still players in the transfer portal searching for new teams. We still have four months until the college football season begins. Now is the ideal moment to unveil our post-spring Top-25 rankings for college football.

Much has happened since Michigan emerged as the national champions. The Wolverines’ coach, Jim Harbaugh, made the decision to leave and pursue a career in the NFL. Nick Saban ended his coaching career at Alabama after 17 seasons. Some players opted to leave early for the NFL draft, while a significant number of others decided to enter the transfer portal.

The presence of strong teams from the Big Ten and SEC will make this college football season the most highly anticipated one since the introduction of the four-team CFP in 2014.

Before you realize it, week 1 of the college football regular season in 2024 will be upon us. Training camp is just a few months away from teams reporting.

Without wasting any time, let’s get into our post-spring outlook as we reach the middle of the offseason.

1. Georgia Bulldogs (2023 record: 13-1)

The College Football Playoff did not include the Bulldogs. Don’t expect that to be the case this year with an expanded field. Carson Beck, recognized as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, is spearheading their team’s efforts to reach the summit of college football once again. Trevor Etienne, a transfer from Florida, provides much-needed depth to the running back position, while the wide receiver and tight end positions possess enough talent to elevate this offense to a top-tier level despite some departures. LB Smael Mondon and DB Malaki Starks are the stars of the defense.

2. Texas Longhorns (12-2)

QB Quinn Ewers and some experienced linemen will be the backbone of the offense. The transfer portal totally revamped the receiving crew and how well they click with Ewers will probably decide if this bunch is as explosive as last year. LB Anthony Hill is the real deal and the secondary has more experience - something they were lacking after the playoff loss to Washington. Texas scores a nice schedule for their SEC debut, but it’s unclear how they’ll handle it along with the game against Michigan.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes (11-2)

This team skyrocketed after crushing it in the transfer portal. The Buckeyes got Caleb Downs from Alabama and Quinshon Judkins from Mississippi. They also got Will Howard from Kansas State to fill the gap left by Kyle McCord. When it comes to defensive linemen, Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau are among the most formidable pairs in the country. The defense is also bolstered by the return of linebacker Cody Simon and safety Lathan Ransom. However, is it possible for the Buckeyes to defeat Michigan? That is the question that will need to be answered.

4. Oregon Ducks (12-2)

In contrast to the other Pac-12 teams, the Ducks won’t experience much culture shock in the Big Ten. Their physical playing style, under Dan Lanning, is perfectly suited for going up against Midwest teams. Getting adjusted to a new system was QB Dillon Gabriel’s main focus during the spring following his arrival from Oklahoma. The passing game will be led by him, who will be targeting Tez Johnson, a receiver who had an impressive 1,000-yard season, while rising junior Jordan James handles the running game. The defensive line showcased their dominance in the spring game, further solidifying Oregon’s status as one of the Big Ten favorites.

5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-3)

Marcus Freeman made significant moves in the offseason, including the hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, showing Notre Dame’s determination to improve their offensive performance from multiple angles. If Beaux Collins and other recruits live up to their potential, containing the Fighting Irish on that side of the football in 2024 will be a challenge. Denbrock’s 2023 offense at LSU led the nation in yards per play, and adding Duke quarterback Riley Leonard from the portal is only going to serve good rewards for the Irish. Leonard’s running and passing skills are expected to improve significantly under Denbrock’s guidance, just like Jayden Daniels did on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy. The health of Leonard will have to be something we will have to wait on, but if he can stay healthy, this unit will be amongst the best in all of FBS. The return of safety Xavier Watts will give a significant boost to one of the strongest defenses in the FBS.

6. Ole Miss Rebels (11-2)

The Rebels made significant investments to strengthen their roster by acquiring key players such as DL Walter Nolen from Texas A&M, Princely Umanmielen from Florida, and WR Antwane Wells from South Carolina. Starting his third season, QB Jaxson Dart will lead the offense, while WR Tre Harris is expected to have a standout season. This should be a team that is right in the thick of the playoff race.

7. Alabama Crimson Tide (12-2)

We need to confront the obvious matter at hand. In the face of losing the most legendary coach in modern college football, how does the Crimson Tide adapt? Kalen DeBoer is a great choice for the job, especially with QB Jalen Milroe as the centerpiece of his offensive strategy. The top position of ball carrier should be given to RB Justice Haynes. The defense has two big holes at cornerback and loses other key contributors. The group should still be good enough to have them near the top of the polls all season.

8. Missouri Tigers (11-2)

Given the high expectations set after their 11 wins in 2023, this could either be too high or too low for the Tigers. Despite losing Cody Schrader, a Doak Walker finalist in the backfield, the Tigers still have a significant amount of production and managed to fill the void through the portal. When it comes to their respective positions in the SEC, both QB Brady Cook and WR Luther Burden should be recognized as the cream of the crop. RB Marcus Carroll from Georgia State, OL Cayden Green from Oklahoma, and DB Toriano Pride Jr. from Clemson fulfilled important positions in the portal, which has played a significant role in Missouri’s development strategy. But what strategies can be implemented to successfully navigate the higher expectations and tougher SEC schedule?

9. Utah Utes (8-5)

Utes fans can finally rejoice as the wait is over. Following QB Cam Rising’s injury in the 2023 Rose Bowl, fans were finally able to see the sixth-year senior play in the team’s spring game, and he lived up to expectations. One of the main players he aimed to recruit was Dorian Singer from Southern California, suggesting that the upcoming season’s offense will be more dynamic. This is in contrast to the previous season when both Rising and TE Brant Kuithe, who had limited playing time in the spring game, were sidelined due to knee injuries. By increasing offensive production, Utah can reduce the burden on its defense. A strong performance from the group in the Big 12 is expected, which means the Utes will likely be among the top contenders in a closely contested race.

10. Michigan Wolverines (15-0)

The Wolverines played six games without Jim Harbaugh last year, but his permanent departure drastically changes things, especially with loss of QB J.J. McCarthy. Pounding the football with Donovan Edwards and others might be a winning equation for a team on the nation’s longest winning streak. The defense should remain like a brick wall and keep Michigan in games. The question is whether they can win enough of them to return to the college football playoff.

11. Florida State Seminoles (13-1)

Norvell has established himself as an expert in the transfer portal, once again ensuring that the Seminoles boast one of the strongest rosters in the ACC. Norvell demonstrated his offseason skills by assembling a top-notch signing class and making key additions through the transfer portal. With this talent reload, he is expected to greatly benefit from the expansion of the playoffs. With a range of talented teammates surrounding him, DJ Uiagalelei, the former quarterback for Oregon State and Clemson, has an added advantage. Furthermore, his ability to quickly understand the offense will contribute to his success.

12. Penn State Nittany Lions (10-3)

It was pretty evident last season against Ohio State and Michigan. The Nittany Lions didn’t have enough offensive power to defeat the top teams in the Big Ten. In order to tackle the problems, coach James Franklin brought in Andy Kotelnicki from Kansas to oversee the offense, and the return of QB Drew Allar appears to be a promising pairing, despite Allar not meeting his lofty expectations thus far. Fans are anticipating a powerful offense for the first time in a while. Meeting these requirements is essential to become a formidable team in the Big Ten, just like other top contenders. Encouraging progress was observed in the spring. The biggest worry for the offense is the receiving group that lost KeAndre Lambert-Smith and three others in the portal. The arrival of Julian Fleming from Ohio State helps offset some concerns. On defense, transfers A.J. Harris (Georgia) and Jalen Kimber (Florida) addressed secondary losses. Nevertheless, this team must showcase its abilities in a demanding league schedule that has the power to determine its fate.

13. NC State Wolfpack (9-4)

Being cautious about spring football as a definitive predictor of success in the season is always important. Nevertheless, the Wolfpack must be ecstatic about how Grayson McCall, the former quarterback of Coastal Carolina, assumed control of the offense, and they must be excited about the addition of Noah Rogers, a receiver who transferred from Ohio State. With rising sophomore KC Concepcion, N.C. State has two of the better young receivers in the country to pair with McCall in what could be the ACC’s best offense. There is every reason to believe that NC State will surpass nine wins under Doeren this season. The September games against Tennessee and Clemson will serve as a litmus test for the progress of the Wolfpack in college football.

14. LSU Tigers (10-3)

Brian Kelly recruited Blake Baker, the defensive coordinator from Missouri, to address the significant issue faced by his program following a successful 10-win season. It’s incredible to think that Jayden Daniels, who won the Heisman, was overshadowed by the Tigers’ poor defensive performance. This ultimately cost LSU a chance at a second consecutive SEC West title and a trip to Atlanta. Garrett Nussmeier, the new starting quarterback in 2024, showcased impressive skills during the spring game. While he may not possess the same running abilities as Jayden Daniels, there is no doubt that the offense will continue to thrive under Nussmeier’s leadership. He now has a promising group of less-recognized wide receivers to pass to, with the addition of Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. to the NFL.

15. Tennessee Volunteers (9-4)

In terms of offense, Nico Iamaleava is leading the Vols as their quarterback, marking the beginning of a new era. During his first career start in the Citrus Bowl, he made a significant impact by scoring four touchdowns, which solidified his reputation as a standout player at his position. There were numerous commendable elements in his production during the Bowl Game. Hendon Hooker already deemed him “the chosen one” in Knoxville. Hooker’s significance to the program and his elevated success as the starting quarterback makes the praise even more noteworthy. Much like Michael Penix Jr. demonstrated at Washington, Iamaleava is the type of skilled individual who has a positive impact on the abilities of those in his vicinity. Despite recently losing leading tackler Elijah Herring to the transfer portal, a significant portion of the defense remains intact. The most pressing question that needs resolution concerns the offensive line, which suffered from a shortage of players as a result of injuries. The revamp of the defense, particularly in the secondary, continues to be a topic of interest. 

Tennessee will face NC State in an early nonconference test, as well as away games against Oklahoma and Georgia, with a home game against Alabama. If Nico Iamaleava lives up to the hype, the Vols could have a shot at the playoffs.

16. Clemson Tigers (9-4)

Clemson’s hype tends to diminish after spring, which aligns with Dabo Swinney’s preference. Being referred to as a dark horse brings him immense satisfaction. While Clemson welcomes the return of Phil Mafah, they’ll need to find alternative methods to generate productivity in their running game to alleviate some of the pressure on Cade Klubnik, who is back as the Tigers’ primary quarterback for his second season. It is anticipated that Clemson’s defense will be one of the best in the country. Following the Tigers’ four consecutive losses, which hadn’t occurred since 2011, and their 52nd ranking in scoring offense (averaging 29.8 points per game) in the FBS, one would have expected the logical decision to be the acquisition of more skilled and refined players through the Transfer Portal. Nevertheless, in this particular instance, they opted to work with their existing players. Only time will reveal whether Dabo will face embarrassment once more, or if they will achieve success this season.

17. Kansas State Wildcats (9-4)

Do you know why the Wildcats are one of the picks that are trending up to win the expanded Big 12? Avery Johnson. Who could forget when he threw for two touchdowns and added another rushing touchdown in the Pop-Tarts Bowl win over NC State? He is a rising superstar, and everyone knows it. Some would say that losing multi-year starting quarterback Will Howard to the transfer portal could be difficult to overcome, but let’s be honest: Howard saw the writing on the wall, and I don’t believe that this Kansas State offense will show any ill effects of his departure after Johnson handled the offense with a flare for big plays on the move. 

The Wildcats don’t play the Utes during the regular season and get Oklahoma State and Kansas at home. Two of their bigger matchups on their schedule. Road trips to BYU, West Virginia and Iowa State might be a problem if they aren’t trending in the right direction in these matchups.

18. Oklahoma Sooners (10-3)

The Sooners improved from six wins to 10, including a victory over Texas (shocking, I know) in Brent Venables’ second season. Quarterback Jackson Arnold had an impressive performance during the spring, and the receiving corp is expected to be exceptionally good, especially with the addition of Purdue transfer Deion Burks, who stood out as a star in the spring and will be the primary target as a wide receiver. LB Danny Stutsman and DB Billy Bowman, two standout players, have decided to stay for another season, which will further enhance the defense’s performance. The pivotal question is whether the Sooners are equipped to endure the demanding and protracted challenges of the SEC.

19. Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-4)

When Alan Bowman is healthy, he has demonstrated his abilities, and now that he is back as the undisputed starting quarterback this spring, the Cowboys should avoid the slow start that hindered them last season. Additionally, Ollie Gordon, the exceptional running back, and Brennan Pressley, the talented wide receiver, have returned, providing the offense with two crucial game-changers. LBs Nickolas Martin and Collin Oliver are the foundation of the defense’s strength. It is crucial for them to enhance their pass defense as they had a ranking of 126th in the FBS in 2023, allowing an average of 275 yards per game. The lack of major portal additions and departures made for a pretty uneventful spring(and could end up biting them in the end), which is how coach Mike Gundy would have wanted it as he tries to get Oklahoma State back to the Big 12 title game.

20. Arizona Wildcats (10-3)

Unless you were living under a rock, there was a massive ripple effect when Nick Saban announced his retirement. One of the dominoes that fell was when the Wildcats lost then-head coach Jedd Fisch to the Washington Huskies and completely added waves to a team that was primed to be Big 12 favorites. Nevertheless, despite a few individuals leaving, there were crucial players who returned to the team. Quarterback Noah Fifita, wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, and defensive back Tacario Davis were the most prominent players. If Brent Brennan’s first season goes as planned, the Wildcats could potentially have another successful season with 10 wins.

21. Virginia Tech Hokies (7-6)

After years of false hope and ineptitude, is this finally the season the Hokies return to contending for the ACC title? Maybe, maybe not, but that’s why we’re here to discuss these matters. Momentum and enthusiasm are building in Hokies Nation after a strong finish in 2023 and a promising spring. Brent Pry has meticulously laid the groundwork for his rebuilding project over the past two seasons, and now everything is falling into place for him. He has done an exceptional job. Virginia Tech is now in a position to enjoy the advantages as all 11 offensive starters are coming back. The starting point is quarterback Kyron Drones, who boasted an impressive record of 22 touchdowns and only three interceptions in 2023. However, it is important to mention the noteworthy depth they have at both running back and wide receiver positions. The team bolstered their defensive line by acquiring three new players, one of whom is Aeneas Peebles, an all-conference tackle from Duke, to address a specific area of need. Keep in mind that the Hokies might make it to the conference title game, so don’t be shocked if you see them there.

22. Kansas Jayhawks (9-4)

Yeah, you don’t need to clean your glasses, you read that right. Optimism runs high in Lawrence, Kansas. You could say that maybe it’s because quarterback Jalon Daniels is back and healthy. Maybe this is the year that he can stay healthy. Daniels showed in the spring that he is going to be electric once again “if,” and that’s a big “if” he can stay on the field this fall. Injuries has plagued him in the past two seasons, but if the Jayhawks go anywhere this season it will be because of him being on the field. There are plenty of weapons for him to work with, starting with running back Devin Neal and the team’s top three receivers from last season. If this team reaches its full potential, it will be because of its defense. Bai Jobe, a transfer out of Michigan State, will help with the pass rush, which is a weak spot on this team. 

23. Iowa Hawkeyes (10-4)

Is this the last year that we will be hearing the phrase “punter university”?With Brian Ferentz no longer the offensive coordinator, the Hawkeyes have successfully eliminated a major controversy and improved their offense significantly compared to last season. With the appointment of former Western Michigan coach Tim Lester, the worst-ranked offense in the nation has hope for improvement. Lester’s main priority will be ensuring the well-being of QB Cade McNamara, especially considering his significant absence from last season. McNamara had limited participation in spring practice, so it seems necessary to add a quarterback as a backup. With the defense remaining as strong as ever, it comes as no surprise that another season with 10 wins seems possible, especially considering the potential for offensive improvement. Even a slight improvement in the offense could lead to a highly successful season, especially with a consistently strong defense that is always among the top-ranked teams.

24. Southern California Trojans (8-5)

The Trojans have high hopes that the addition of new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn this spring will mark the beginning of a positive turnaround for their defense. It can be expected that there will be gains, given Lynn’s work at UCLA. The concern is the extent of the offensive setback caused by QB Caleb Williams’ departure. Miller Moss had an impressive performance in the Holiday Bowl, earning the offensive MVP title. He threw a record-breaking six touchdowns and continued his strong momentum into the offseason. He is the frontrunner for the starting position, ahead of UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava. Coach Lincoln Riley was pleased with the performance of the offensive line, as he believes they will contribute to a more well-rounded team. Joining the Big Ten will come with its fair share of difficulties. The Trojans have upcoming games against LSU (in Las Vegas), Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Washington, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. It won’t be easy, but Riley has the potential to bring the team close to the top of the league.

25. Miami Hurricanes (7-6)

Mario Cristobal has undeniably been accumulating talent, both through traditional high school recruiting and the transfer portal. Following a record of 12-13 in his initial two seasons, Cristobal must translate that talent into actual wins. The Hurricanes have only managed to achieve a 10-win season once in the last twenty years, and they have often failed to meet high expectations. However, the addition of transfer quarterback Cam Ward and running back Damien Martinez to the Hurricanes brings a lot of optimism. The offensive line should be solid, and Miami added Houston’s Sam Brown to a solid receiver corps. Miami’s coaching staff will play a crucial role in leading the team to their first double-digit win season since 2017, especially if they can maximize the performance of their top players from last year, such as Xavier Restrepo and Rueben Bain Jr., while also ensuring the team remains injury-free. Miami has an exceptionally easy schedule compared to other teams in the country. So, it could wind up higher than this. But let’s wait and see.

The spring transfer portal for college football is ongoing, but it is starting to slow down as it has officially closed, and many top players have already made their decisions.

As is customary, there are clear winners and a few losers from this cycle. Despite the lack of significant activity in the spring transfer portal window, there are still many teams about which we have uncertainties as we move from April to summer workouts.

Here are the teams that saw improvements, regressions, or are still uncertain after the spring window. Two teams in Florida should be pleased with the portal rewards they have received, so let's begin there.

WINNER: UCF KNIGHTS

Despite competition from significant programs, UCF has successfully recruited top talent, such as four-star RB Frankie Arthur from Texas. Once again, we witnessed UCF's impressive ability to close deals during the spring transfer portal window successfully.

UCF signed Peny Boone, a highly regarded four-star running back from Toledo who was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year for 2023. Miami transfer Nyjalik Kelly, a highly sought-after four-star edge player, was also successfully recruited by them despite facing competition from several prestigious programs. In their recruitment efforts, the team secured top-ranked players like Tre'Quon Fegans from USC and Cedrick Hawkins from Ohio State.

Also, let's not forget about Jacurri Brown. The Knights most likely got a quarterback from Miami who will be their long-term solution at the position. Gus Malzahn's system couldn't find a better fit than Brown.

By adding critical players at various positions and remaining in contention for top recruits, the Knights are proving to be highly competitive in recruiting despite being just one year into their tenure in the Power Four conferences. The Big 12 Conference may be in trouble if UCF continues on this success.

The 2024 NBA Draft Lottery has come and gone; some teams that finished their 2023-24 campaign in dreadful fashion got rewarded with a top pick, while other teams that were equally atrocious or even worse did not have luck play in their favor. At this point, rosters are believed to be improved for the July 27th NBA Draft.

The NBA draft offers hope that better days are ahead for some teams or that success can be sustained for other teams.

It’s hoped that you can draft a prospect with a No. 1 pick, such as Victor Wembanyama in 2023, find a prospect like Donovan Mitchell with a 13th pick, such as in 2017, or even find a superstar with a No. 3 pick, such as Luka Doncic in 2018.

The Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards were the frontrunners to secure the No. 1 pick with the highest odds at 14%, despite their poor records of 14-68 and 15-67, respectively. Despite their 36-46 record, the Hawks had a slim 3% chance of winning the selection, with odds of +3000.

Against all expectations, on Sunday, the Atlanta Hawks emerged as the winners of the NBA draft lottery. Washington secured the second pick, while Houston came in at number three, San Antonio at number four, and Detroit at number five.

Winning the lottery last year was a reason for the San Antonio Spurs to rejoice, as it meant they had a chance to secure an extraordinary player like Victor Wembanyama. However, the 2024 NBA draft class does not have a standout prospect, and there is no widespread consensus on who the best player is.

The NBA draft lottery has produced both winners and losers, and here is the breakdown.

WINNER: Atlanta Hawks

It’s pretty clear-cut. Despite expectations of a weaker NBA draft class, the Atlanta Hawks emerged as the biggest winners on Sunday by moving from the 10th pick to the first pick in the Draft.

If the team is determined to separate Trae Young and Dejounte Murray in the backcourt, this draft pick or the chosen player could serve as an additional asset to enhance the trade package when moving either one of them. After a trade, the player chosen could also become an integral part of any remaining foundation, adding depth and strength to the team.

Atlanta could potentially improve the Murray-Young pairing by selecting a wing or big player that complements the team’s existing core from last season.

Adding to the intrigue is that the Hawks, who didn’t seem like a serious contender for the top pick, are now in the mix. They qualified for the play-in tournament and had just a three percent chance of winning the lottery. Taking a crash course in scouting the best stars might be necessary for the front office so they can improve their talent selection. Winning the lottery has opened up a plethora of options for the Hawks. And they cast their net wider, exploring options beyond just the players who are likely contenders for the first overall selection. There is much for the Atlanta Hawks to ponder before July 27th rolls around. 

Loser: Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have been enduring a rough patch for the past half-decade, with little improvement in sight.

Over the course of the last five years, their game-winning rate has been a paltry 24.5 percent. That’s dead-last in the league over that span, and the gap between them and 29th place is about the same as between 29th and 16th.

Once again, the Detroit Pistons found themselves with the NBA’s worst record for the second season in a row, and once again, luck was not on their side as they slid in the draft lottery. Despite having a 50-50 shot, the Pistons’ hopes were dashed as they ended up with the No. 5 pick. The sting of not having a Wembanyama in this year’s Draft lessened slightly, knowing that the Pistons still have the opportunity to select a productive player at No. 5. But, the fact is, the ping-pong balls did not bounce the Pistons’ way.

Despite years of lackluster basketball, the Pistons have yet to acquire a standout player. And though this class may not have had one, it would’ve been nice to look from the top pick rather than the fifth.

Winner: San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs already won what was likely the lottery of the decade in 2023, when they secured the right to take Victor Wembanyama first overall.

There was a 54.1 percent chance that the Spurs would secure a top-six protected pick from the Raptors. It worked out with near perfection. The Raptors were pushed down to the No. 8 pick, which they promptly shipped to San Antonio. 

The Spurs also had a 42.1 percent shot of having their own pick land in the top four. They snatched that No. 4 pick to go along with No. 8. This is when you can say the Basketball Gods are blessing the Spurs beyond belief.

Nikola Topic is an intriguing option out of Serbia. Standing at 6-5, he has a remarkable physical presence and can break down defenses with his ability to drive to the basket. Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham are potential choices, along with defensive standout Stephon Castle from UConn. 

Despite their lack of victories last season, the Spurs have a promising opportunity to improve quickly. With Wemby’s continued growth and the addition of young talent in the upcoming Draft, they can swiftly turn things around.

LOSER: Toronto Raptors 

To retain their pick this year, the Raptors had to secure a spot within the top six of the Draft. They pivoted from a group trying to make the playoffs to one desperate to meet that goal by season’s end. Now, they have nothing to show from a miserable last few months of consistent losing. Their pick will be sent to the Spurs. 

This marks the end of a disastrous trade they made at the 2023 trade deadline. In return for Khem Birch, the 2024 No. 8 pick, and two future second-round picks, they obtained Jakob Poeltl. Poeltl has been a good player but is worth far from the price tag he is currently being paid. 

Toronto is still fortunate to have a first-round pick courtesy of a trade with the Indiana Pacers. However, having two chances in the Draft (or additional leverage for potential trades) is more advantageous than just one.

Winner: Houston Rockets

There were a couple of stretches this season when it looked like the Houston Rockets would have a real shot to make the postseason. They fell a little short of that dream, but they are far ahead of schedule regarding the progress of their young stars (Şengün, Jalen Green).

The Rockets had two chances to jump into the top four. If their own pick had landed there, then they would have kept it. Instead, they shipped off the No. 12 pick to the Thunder. They also owned the unprotected Nets pick, which had a 20.3 percent chance of going into the top four. That pick luckily landed at No. 3.

The team’s refusal to tank paid off with an impressive return. They significantly improved in the offseason and finished with a 41-41 record, a drastic improvement from their 22-win performance last season. The drawback is that they will need to surrender their 2026 first-round pick to either the Thunder or Sixers, but fortunately, they are moving in a positive direction.

Loser: Charlotte Hornets

The Charlotte Hornets are on an upward trajectory. They not only have LaMelo Ball, who is a standout player when he’s in good health, but they also drafted Brandon Miller as the second overall pick in the previous NBA Draft. Although this decision received a lot of criticism, it proved to be the right one, as Miller had an outstanding first year in the league.

The Houston Rockets surged into the top three of the NBA lottery, while Charlotte was pushed down to the sixth overall pick. This is not ideal for the Hornets, who are looking to build their roster. New Head coach Charles Lee has a load on his plate right now, varying from the struggles with the current roster to the devastating struggles of the team in recent years. The Hornets have been in a deep rebuild for the past five-plus years and posted a paltry 21-61 record this season. 

As previously mentioned, a reconstruction like this can be time-consuming, but the team does have a promising player in LaMelo Ball, who can serve as the cornerstone. He will remain the main focus but also require another young star. Despite that, Brandon Miller and Mark Williams showed great promise in their growth this year. The Hornets would greatly benefit from enhancing their talent level at any position.

A guard for LaMelo Insurance and to pair in the backcourt with him is an intriguing option. Alternatively, they could draft another wing to pair with Miller. This is still possible at six, but the Hornets could have used more options toward the top of their Draft, especially considering the rebuild stage. Furthermore, the Hornets need to get the sixth pick right, which could be challenging in this year’s Draft due to the plethora of diamonds in the rough.

WINNER: Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder, who had the second-best record, have reaped the benefits of stockpiling draft picks over the years. In 2019, the Oklahoma City Thunder traded Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets, and as part of the deal, they received a top-four protected first-round pick from the Rockets in 2024. Since the pick didn’t make it to the top four, the Thunder will receive it, providing a team with a remarkable track record in scouting and drafting the chance to enhance their roster with another talented player. The Thunder have exceeded expectations in their rebuilding process and now boast a talented roster with multiple star players and great depth.

Sam Presti, the executive vice president and GM of the Thunder, will do everything possible to maximize the value of this pick. With a huge collection of draft picks, he has the flexibility to pursue any player he desires, whether he decides to trade up or trade down and accumulate additional assets for the team. The Thunder have a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of the Draft.

Loser: Portland Trailblazers

NBA teams that intentionally performed poorly to increase their chances of securing a top draft pick but failed can be considered losers of the lottery. Specifically, the Trailblazers are one of those teams. 

Following a disappointing 2023-24 season, where they finished with a 21-61 record - the lowest in the Western Conference, they participated in the Draft Lottery with a 13.2 percent chance of securing the coveted first overall pick, the fourth-highest odds among all teams. Regrettably, fortune did not favor them, resulting in a seventh-place finish in the draft order.

With the 7th and 14th pick(Golden State) in the Draft and no more Damian Lillard, nobody is coming to save the Trail Blazers. The team that flourished in Portland for years now faces a bleak outlook.

Last week, Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, participated in an online confrontation with The Athletic, Austin Peay’s football team, various other individuals, his son, Shedeur Sanders, and some of his team members.

In response to a recent report made by Xavier Smith, a former safety for the Buffaloes, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders defended Coach Prime and refuted Smith’s claim that he was eroding players’ self-belief behind closed doors.

A piece written by Max Olsen, a journalist for The Athletic, triggered the altercation. The transfer portal captured the journey and experiences of 53 players who joined after Deion Sanders became the coach at Colorado. This specific article provided a platform for players who left Colorado to express their thoughts, allowing them to share their perspectives that might have been overlooked. The author did a great job with this article, effectively documenting the journeys of these players. In my opinion, there were no flaws in the piece, but others did not perceive it the same way.

The Sanders family might be frustrated with the article from Max Olson at the Athletic, as well as the quote from Austin Peay defensive back Xavier Smith, “We sat on the sofa, and (Deion Sanders) is talking to us, but he’s not even looking at us. I’m looking (at Defensive Coordinator Charles) Kelly, dead in his eyes. (Sanders) said he felt like I should hit the portal. He didn’t want me to waste a year thinking I could earn a spot. I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me.”

Shedeur Sanders, who quoted the story on social media, said (I don’t) even remember him (to be honest). Bro had to be very mid at best,” Shedeur Sanders tweeted last Tuesday. 

That prompted someone on social media to say that he should “quit acting like the coldest man on the planet,” and Deion Sanders defended his son with a jab about the 2025 NFL Draft, in which the Buffs quarterback is favored to be the first overall pick. 

However, Deion Sanders didn’t stop there and continued on. Additionally, he commented on defensive back Jaheim Ward’s 2023 performance, where he made eight solo tackles and defended four passes, expressing his surprise with the phrase “Lawd Jesus.”

Ward previously stood up for Smith, his former teammate with the Governors, saying that people shouldn’t be “trying to downplay” his remarks. If that wasn’t enough to warrant a reply from Deion Sanders, Ward also recently posted that it was “crazy” that he had “more pass deflections” than his other son, Colorado safety Shilo Sanders — along with a couple of not-so-friendly clown emojis.

Smith’s effectiveness for the Buffaloes was hindered by injuries. In 2023, he received freshman All-America recognition while playing for FCS Austin Peay. Since then, he has joined coach Scotty Walden at UTEP.

The existence of social media doesn’t necessarily mean you must go out of your way to use it, especially to such an extent. It is completely unacceptable to engage in immature quarrels in front of the entire college football audience. As a leader of young men, Deion Sanders must set a higher standard for himself. Once upon a time, your words were unnecessary as your play on the field spoke volumes. Ever since joining the Buffaloes, Colorado football and the Sanders have faced intense scrutiny. This recent outburst serves as a reminder that sometimes it’s better to ignore individuals with a small following (200+ followers) when you have a massive following (5 million followers), in order to handle situations more effectively.

Did Deion Sanders and son Shedeur go too far with the social media exchanges?

On one side of the coin, I get it. I really do. You’re going to battle for your dad, your coach. You’re defending him, the program, and the players on the team. In situations like this, you have to defend your troops. Truly, I get it. However, it is more effective and respectful to find alternative ways to express oneself or discuss others without resorting to negative comments about former teammates.

As the quarterback, you hold the role of team leader both on and off the field, and your teammates often look to you for guidance. Proper representation of yourself, the team, and the coaching staff is crucial.

Publicly supporting your current teammates on Twitter while simultaneously criticizing a former teammate can damage your reputation. Your teammates are likely to notice and may follow suit. Which is the way it played out.

If I’m in the Shedeur Sanders camp, I’d pull him to the side and say hey you need to help yourself now, so it helps you a year from now, and that means being more professional and tactful about how you attack certain scenarios like a Twitter beef with ex-teammates. I’m all about defending your family and your brothers, but somebody also needs to show him the bigger picture; you’re constantly under the NFL microscope, especially being a high-value prospect as he currently is. This Twitter war that happened only hurt his draft stock.

If I’m in Deion Sanders camp, We’ve quickly reached the point where everyone involved should probably stop tweeting. Standing up for his son, Deion’s actions are admirable and reflect what any father would do if their child were in Shedeur’s situation. However, you are a head coach at Colorado University, belittling and blasting former players on social media is definitely not the way to go and is something a head coach is supposed to rise above. It’s ok to simply say what every coach says and call it ‘toxic’ or ‘let everyone talk, we’ll do the work here’ type of thing, but this is a bridge too far. It simply is not a good look for a coach to make fun of players on social media. It’s not something a head coach at any school should be doing publicly.

The main takeaway is to avoid tweeting, as certain matters are best left private rather than being shared publicly for anyone with a social media account to see and pry into what goes on behind closed doors. When your program and players are already under scrutiny, it’s best not to engage in trash-talking about departed players, especially in public forums like social media.

I’m okay with trash-talking, as it’s a normal part of the game. However, just like what happened last year before the Oregon game, at some point, you’ll need to prove your words. They will need to back up their trash talk throughout the entire season, and based on my calculations, they are expected to win no more than 5.5 games. Take into consideration that they had a record of four wins last year. Coming into the Big 12 this season, it’s not going to be easy, and I’m just going to say their first game this season is North Dakota State, and I’ll leave it at that.

Shedeur Sanders saw his draft stock take a hit after calling out his Xavier Smith on social media. Sanders opened at +100 on DraftKings to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft but has since seen his stock drop considerably, with oddsmakers moving him down to +300. While I still believe Shedeur has the potential to be a great leader, it is important to address the issues with social media and minimize distractions.

Questions still surround Colorado’s roster

The Buffaloes finished the season with a record of 4-8 (1-8 in Pac-12 play), placing them at the bottom of the conference. This was their first season under Coach Prime’s leadership. 

Shedeur Sanders had an exceptional season last year, particularly when he was well-protected. In spite of facing constant battering and being sacked more than 50 times in the previous fall, Sanders still managed to record impressive numbers in 11 games. Last season, he achieved an impressive 3,230 passing yards, throwing 27 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Additionally, he boasted a passer rating of 151.7 and completed 69.3% of his passes. 

Colorado’s program has once again been the center of attention during the spring transfer portal window for the second consecutive year. The high-profile departures this year, which consist of three starters, three running backs, and two cornerbacks among the 36 players who are expected to join other teams in the upcoming fall, pose a significant challenge for Deion Sanders as he prepares for the 2024-25 season.

Can the offensive line make any progress in terms of improvement? The Buffaloes had a poor performance in blocking last season, ranking among the FBS’ worst teams. They allowed 56 sacks and had a rushing average of only 2.3 yards per carry. Both marks ranked as the worst in the Power Five and doomed Colorado during a 4-8 debut under Deion Sanders. 

Colorado’s primary concern under head coach Deion Sanders is recruiting high school players. The Buffaloes only secured 12 recruits in the 2024 recruiting class, making it the second-weakest class in the Big 12. So far this year, Colorado has only announced three commitments.

Colorado is looking to strengthen their team by utilizing the transfer portal. Last season, the Buffaloes made a significant move by signing 51 transfers, earning them the highest-ranked transfer portal class nationwide. This year, Sanders managed to secure the commitment of 35 players from the portal, solidifying his position with another highly ranked Top-10 transfer portal class in the nation.

We have not seen a team this focused on the portal over high school recruiting in the transfer portal era. It remains an unproven strategy in this age of college football, but Deion Sanders and Colorado will aim to defy the odds next season. According to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings, Colorado is ranked 15th in the Big 12 and 80th overall. According to the On3 team rankings, Colorado is ranked 57th overall and 12th in the conference. It’s okay to bring in multiple transfers, but it’s crucial to have players on those four-year cycles to improve the overall quality of the team and ensure depth. That’s not something you’ll find in Boulder, and it raises concerns about sustainability.

What concerns me the most about this team is that it doesn’t give off the impression of being a cohesive unit. Given the constant influx and outflow of transfers, along with the apparent neglect of recruiting by Colorado, this situation resembles a science fair volcano experiment where a slight mistake in the paper mache could result in a complete collapse. This seems like an experiment, but as the saying goes, “only time will reveal the truth.”

Asking someone, “What determines a superstar in the NBA?” can be a very complex question. An even more complex question is “What determines who is the face of the NBA?” There are multiple metrics to answer these questions, and only a few stars fit the bill. Then there’s the question of if the player has the “clutch gene”, the “killer instinct”, and the “black mamba mentality”.

So let’s get right into it.

Despite the league being packed with stars, Anthony Edwards manages to shine as a true superstar. He consistently works on maintaining and developing a star that he has established. With his exceptional trash-talking skills and prowess in both offense and defense, he has become an elite competitor and a rising star in the advertising world, even being chosen as the face of Sprite’s “Obey Your Thirst campaign” alongside track star Sha’Carri Richardson. Moreover, he possesses the most sought-after basketball footwear in the industry - the Adidas Ae 1s. It may seem like an exaggeration, but the upcoming months have the potential to completely transform Edwards’ life, career, and the future of the NBA. This fact alone brings a sense of satisfaction. Since becoming the number one pick in 2020, he has consistently enhanced different aspects of his game each season. However, in his fourth year, Edwards made significant progress. He improved his free throw percentage by almost 7 points, bringing it to 83.6%. In addition, his productivity and ability to create scoring opportunities have shown improvement (his assists resulted in 1,024 points, slightly lower than starting point guard Mike Conley’s 1,049 points). Edwards has taken charge of a team that hasn’t experienced this level of achievement and enthusiasm since the early 2000s with players like Kevin Garnett and coach Flip Saunders, who later became the team president. Edwards recorded personal bests in various playoff statistics during Minnesota’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns in the first round. To put it plainly, Edwards is no longer on the verge of making it in the NBA. He pays the mortgage here now.

When asked in April on NBA Today how long it would take him to become the NBA’s best player, Edwards didn’t hesitate. “About two or three years,” he said. Edwards’s confidence is Kobe-like or MJ-esque. Nothing seems to get to him, and at the young age of 22, he seems to have the proverbial NBA world on his shoulders.

Edwards exudes a comfortable coolness that goes beyond his basketball skills. At some point in our lives, we have all encountered someone similar to him. He is that co-worker, cousin, college classmate, or friend who has charming self-assurance rather than being intimidating. The presence of these individuals is addictive because of their charismatic aura and confidence. Edwards, a mere 22 years old, leads the Timberwolves’ offense and defense, guiding them to finish as the third seed in the Western Conference. The team is now just one step away from reaching the conference finals for the first time in two decades, with only the presumptive MVP and reigning champion standing in their way.

He isn’t a player without mistakes though, so let’s not get it twisted. Since becoming a professional, he has made plenty of mistakes. Following a challenging defeat, he expressed his anger by throwing chairs and using derogatory language towards the LGBTQ+ community on social media. However, he later issued an apology for his behavior. Nevertheless, there is often a contrast between most 22-year-olds and the individuals who hold leadership positions within organizations. It’s not common for someone to have NBA legend Michael Jordan praising them or openly admitting their determination to “kill” their competition and then successfully doing so, as Edwards just did against Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker. Additionally, it’s rare for individuals in their early twenties to be considered for the prestigious role of representing a multi-billion dollar global sports organization. Despite being on the verge of becoming a superstar, Edwards must tread carefully as the distinction between achieving basketball greatness and becoming a cautionary tale is extremely narrow.

Edwards never fails to amaze us with the chills he gives us during his performances, making it easy to be in awe of him. However, he is merely a man who participates in the beloved game of basketball that millions of fans enjoy observing. When you listen to Edwards speak in interviews you are just blown away by the composure and the coolness he speaks with. Despite his young age, he handles the responsibility of carrying much of the burden for the Minnesota Timberwolves with ease, making him even more likable. 

Edwards, with an average of 31.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 2.0 steals, and 3.5 three-pointers in four playoff games this year, guided the Timberwolves to their first series win in two decades. This was the first time ever that the Timberwolves swept a series, and it’s only the second time in their history that they’ve made it past the second round. But, there is one of many things that Edwards has improved on to make him elite in the short time he’s been in the NBA, and it’s that Edwards has a way of reading the game minute by minute that keeps him constantly in attack mode but also able to make sophisticated reads to get off the ball, and when he’s in that mindset the Timberwolves are a team that is near impossible to stop.

To be a Superstar

Anthony Edwards is a rising star on the brink of achieving Superstardom. Scoring 43 points on 17-of-29 field goals, securing seven rebounds, and dishing out three assists to defeat the defending NBA champions in Game 1 is a clear indication of your stardom. When you score 40 points in a series-clinching victory that gets the Timberwolves their first series victory in 20 years — you’re a star. When you’re one of 12 players, at the age of 22, picked to represent your country in the Olympics, you’re a star. Like it or not, he is a star and one of the few stars that can pull off being the face of the league.

Anthony Edwards can no longer escape the truth that he is a star, no matter how much he tries to run from it. Stars have the ability to elevate the performance of their teammates, much like the impact Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant had. The stars on the team expect a higher level of performance from their teammates and can occasionally be seen as abrasive, making sure that everyone is held responsible. The purpose of having a star on your team is exactly that. The presence of one individual adds depth and significance to the lives of others. He possesses a self-deprecating sense of humor. You’ve witnessed all of his interviews. He is the first to offer congratulations and generously share his accomplishments with his teammates. He is adored by everyone. But it’s impossible for anyone with two eyes and a lick of sense not to see a star when they look at Edwards.

“He’s my favorite player to watch,” Durant said of his star pupil after last Sunday’s game. “He’s just grown so much since coming in the league. At 22, his love for the game shines so bright. That’s one of the reasons why I like him the most because he just loves basketball and is grateful to be in this position.

“He’s going to be someone I follow for the rest of his career.”

The league reported that the Wolves’ guard ranked seventh in terms of player popularity on NBA social channels during the regular season. During the initial week of the playoffs, he amassed a staggering 100 million video views on NBA digital platforms, second only to LeBron James.

“He’s the face of the league, I’ve been saying that,” Wolves forward Karl-Anthony Towns said. “He hates when I say it, but it’s true.”

James has been the holder of that title for an extended period. The NBA has revolved around superstars like James, Durant, and Curry. Nevertheless, all of them are now in their late thirties. Curry’s team failed to reach the playoffs, while Durant and James were eliminated in the first round.

The Derby, Kansas product has faced many obstacles and undergone significant challenges throughout their journey, making it a tumultuous experience thus far. In June 2022, he made the commitment to join the Wildcats as his first choice. Following that, he decided to reopen his recruitment and ultimately made the commitment to Notre Dame in August of 2022. After carefully considering his options, the athlete who was once named the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year made the decision to join the Colorado team and officially signed with the Buffaloes.

The running back, Edwards, caused a stir last week when he revealed his decision to transfer out of Colorado's program, making the Wildcats the frontrunners in signing the talented player.

Edwards is expected to be the backup for DJ Giddens, the Kansas State running back who had an impressive season with 1,226 rushing yards, 323 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns, earning him an honorable mention in the all-conference team. Furthermore, this will enhance the Wildcats’ offensive capabilities by adding a reliable receiving threat out of the backfield. Edwards provides another option but can be used in the slot in Johnson’s first season with the Wildcats.

The son of Leon Edwards, a former K-State running back from the 1990s, will be eligible to play for three years. He can play immediately after leading Colorado in rushing as a freshman last fall. Edwards’ pass-catching also gives QB Avery Johnson another target.

Quarterback Avery Johnson has been a close friend of the running back since they were young. Johnson is viewed as one of the top young quarterbacks in the sport. During the visit, Johnson was even Edwards’ host for the weekend.

Both Nebraska and Texas A&M. highly sought after the tailback Ole Miss reached out, too, but it was always unlikely the Rebels would have room for another running back. K-State always made sense. It’s where his dad went to school, where he initially committed, and where his playing time in the backup role will be substantial. He brings a unique element to the offense with his ability to catch out of the backfield and his speed.

Edwards, a speedy 5-foot-9, 170-pound running back, made a name for himself in Kansas high school history with his dynamic play. In his debut season as a true freshman, Edwards showcased his talent by rushing for an impressive 321 yards for the Buffaloes in 2023. In addition, he accumulated 36 receptions, gaining a total of 299 yards and scoring four touchdowns. In his Colorado debut, he scored three receiving touchdowns, helping the Buffaloes secure a thrilling 45-42 victory over TCU in the season opener. Dylan Edwards can also instantly bolster the Wildcats’ rushing game, making an immediate impact.

The Backstory

It is common knowledge in the sports world that a lot of kids play youth football growing up. But the key to this story isn’t just that he’s transferring to Kansas State; yes, that’s a part of it, but there is a bigger picture here. As of Dec. 28, 2023, a new quarterback is at the helm for the Wildcats. His name is Avery Johnson. He is one of the more promising quarterbacks in college football.   

Avery Johnson, the starting quarterback for K-State, was not just a teammate to Edwards in youth football but also one of his closest friends. They had known each other since they were six years old, growing up together in the Wichita area.

Edwards discussed the process of becoming a Wildcat with Kansas State’s D. Scott Fritchen and provided some glowing remarks, comparing the Big 12’s newest dynamic duo to superheroes.

“Me and Avery on the same team, that’s like Batman and Robin, you know?” Edwards said.

He then mentioned the joy of signing to play at Kansas State, saying, “I just bawled my eyes out because I was full of joy that this was really happening.”

The transfer of the third-ranked running back recruit from the Class of 2023 signifies a transition that goes beyond the usual motives of seeking increased NIL endorsements or additional playtime. The significance of this event lies in the heartfelt reunion with a close friend and the nostalgic feeling of returning to familiar grounds.

What is the impact on Conor Riley’s offense?

During his time at Derby High School, the Panthers had an impressive record of 42 wins and 7 losses across four seasons. Additionally, Edwards showcased his exceptional skills by rushing for a remarkable 6,426 yards, averaging an impressive 10.3 yards per carry and 178.5 yards per game. Furthermore, he scored an outstanding 95 touchdowns during his high school career. His impact on the game extended beyond his receiving abilities. In addition to catching 40 passes for 556 yards and seven touchdowns, he also showcased his skills as a return specialist, scoring three touchdowns on kickoff returns and three touchdowns on punt returns.

Although Giddens is expected to be the primary running back for the newly appointed offensive coordinator Conor Riley and co-coordinator Matt Wells, there will still be a sufficient number of opportunities for other players to get involved. The trio of Giddens, Johnson, and Edwards poses a formidable challenge for opposing teams, making them a three-headed monster that could potentially be the most explosive backfield unit in the Big 12.

The backfield, which is already filled with talented players, becomes even stronger with the addition of Edwards, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying season. You could see many times last year when Giddens was looking beaten down; he didn’t get much of a break, with Treshaun Ward being injured a lot. I’m just going to say Dylan Edwards is better than Ward. The big issue that people are truly missing from his game is that he will line up in the slot frequently and in the backfield with Giddens.

Incorporating two running back sets into the offense will not only foster a greater level of creativity but also enable the team to strategically maneuver Edwards into different positions, ultimately granting him more opportunities to showcase his explosive playmaking abilities. When the ball is in his hands, Dylan showcases not only elite speed but also exceptional vision. By incorporating additional weapons into an offense that already showcases exceptional playmakers, Kansas State is poised to become an even more formidable opponent in the coming fall.

What will the Wildcats offense look like?

This offense is getting a facelift of sorts. It isn’t going to be an air raid offense, nor is it going to be a power-running offense. The best way to explain it is that it’s going to be a mix of West Coast offense sprinkled with a little bit of option magic. It will be something other than Giddens, who gets four plays, and then you put Edwards in for two plays. Edwards will get on the field as much as possible, involving him in the perimeter, the backfield, and various other areas. The Wildcats have been lacking a player with this specific skill set for quite a few years, so having someone like that would be a game-changer for the team. Edwards will allow the offensive coordinator to be able to open up the playbook for the versatility he can bring. Plus, having Edwards in the backfield will help Avery Johnson not have to run the ball 20+ times a game. Yes, Johnson running the ball is electric, and in certain situations, a QB run play is needed, but not 20+ times. The addition of Edwards allows Kansas State to do that.

In short-yardage situations, you’ll see Giddens at fullback and Edwards on the other side; maybe they will give it to Giddens or Edwards. They are going to have many options (no pun intended). There will be a lot of two-back sets, some triangle sets where Johnson is the deep back, and both running backs are flanking him. There will be some crossbuck action where one running back receives the ball from the quarterback while the other fakes possession (gives running backs more gaps to run to). You’ll also see some play action-pass, attacking the perimeter. Due to the versatility of the backfield, numerous formations will be implemented, offering a variety of tactical options. Every offense desires the kind of versatility that the Wildcats currently possess. With the newfound ability, you now have the opportunity to be part of numerous formations that will consistently apply pressure on the opposing defense.

In Manhattan, Kansas, this fall, Kansas State fans should be thrilled to witness the arrival of a top-tier playmaker who will undoubtedly enhance the team’s performance. Even with the past with Dylan Edwards initially committing and recommitting with Kansas State out of high school, if Chris Klieman and the Kansas State staff can put that behind them, so should everyone else, and enjoy having a great player join the squad.

Head coach Chris Klieman will undoubtedly be eager to integrate Edwards into the lineup, with the aim of creating a strong offensive unit that can compete at the highest level.

The anticipation is high within the football program at K-State as Edwards and Johnson, who have a shared history and friendship, reunite. This dynamic offensive partnership is expected to pave the way for success on the field and build a bright future for the team.

In a deal with the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs traded up four spots to pick Worthy. Buffalo received picks 32, 95, and 221 in exchange for picks 28, 133, and 248. The Chiefs were excited to add another elite pass catcher to their roster, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding second-year player Rashee Rice. In other words, the Chiefs direly needed another playmaker.

Speaking to the media, assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi revealed the Chiefs were contacting other teams to secure an earlier pick and draft the fast wideout.

"Having six quarterbacks go within the top 12 picks... 1984 would've been the last time?" Borgonzi began. "We knew it was quarterbacks, it was receivers, it was tackles and there was going to be a run on these guys. Tackles went off the board, probably at 20 [or] 21, that we were kind of focused on. With Worthy, we were waiting for him. We tried to trade up earlier for him in the 20s and got him a little bit later."

It is indisputable that both parties are satisfied with the choice. Worthy's excitement during draft week could exceed that of the team, as shown by his Instagram message to the Chiefs' team account: “Just two more days!" In Worthy, Kansas City is acquiring the quickest player from the 2024 class and someone who shattered the record for the fastest 40-yard dash ever.

Although Worthy's speed is impressive, there is more to him than just that. The ex-Longhorn demonstrates exceptional ball-tracking skills and consistently maintains his speed throughout the play. With his quickness, length, and football intelligence, he is poised to significantly impact the Chiefs' offense and help them bounce back in 2024.

The Breakdown

At the NFL combine, Worthy, standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, broke the record for the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.21 seconds. He ranks third in school history with 26 touchdown receptions and fourth in career receiving yards with 2,755. In 2023, he notched 75 catches for 1,014 yards and scored five touchdowns, showcasing his remarkable talent.

Worthy was recognized as a second-team All-American in 2023 for his exceptional skills as a return specialist, leading the FBS in punt return yards. Additionally, he was recognized as a first-team All-Big 12 player for his wide receiver and return specialist skills. Worthy was the top receiver for the Longhorns in all three seasons and never missed a game.

How will he fit in with the Chiefs?

Have you heard of Tyreek Hill? If you have watched any football over almost the past decade, then you would know how electrifying he is as a player. Over the years, the Chiefs have consistently prioritized fast receivers with explosive playmaking abilities. This focus on speed and explosiveness remained even when Hill was absent, and it has continued with the addition of players like Rashee Rice. 

Of course, being paired with Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, who mainly attracts attention in the middle of the field and is sometimes double-teamed, Worthy has the potential to break this offense open with his rare 4.21 speed. The few knocks on Worthy are that he weighed in at 165 at the combine and that Marquise Brown and Worthy are in the same WR group; size and play strength could be issues. But Worthy isn’t a one-trick pony; he has a ridiculous amount of upside in Reid’s scheme with his vertical ability and RAC value, and given the uncertainty surrounding Rashee Rice, this move makes even more sense. Putting on 10 pounds or so would put that other negative knock on him that he is too small to play in the NFL to rest.

The Chiefs' decision to select Worthy in the draft is both sensible and thrilling. He is the fastest player on the team's roster, and with Marquise "Hollywood" Brown by his side, he should assist Mahomes in connecting on deep passes more frequently, which was lacking in last season's offense.

The offensive side of the ball in the 2024 NFL Draft is stacked with talented quarterbacks, wide receivers, and offensive tackles who are expected to dominate and make a significant impact on Day 1.

The projection below does not have any defensive players chosen in the top 10 picks and has three chosen in the first half of the first round alone. In terms of imbalance, I can’t recall a period when offense was so dominant.

There has been a lot of speculation that this discrepancy might lead to a flurry of trades. Although this class has many skilled players, it lacks the overall talent that previous years had. Several potential draft picks have opted to remain in college football because of the NIL and transfer regulations. The potential outcome of this situation is that it may discourage trades, as only the most courageous individuals would be willing to offer extra picks to improve their position in this year’s draft.

With that, here is my final mock of the first round ahead of Thursday’s draft.

1. Chicago Bears: QB Caleb Williams, USC

The first selection in the 2024 NFL Draft is a foregone conclusion, easily the most predictable choice of the draft. Chicago’s need for a new quarterback is evident, and Williams stands out as the most polished prospect since Andrew Luck. Boasting 72 passing touchdowns, Williams possesses the essential skills to rejuvenate the Bears’ offense.

2. Washington Commanders: QB Drake Maye, North Carolina 

For years, Washington has been searching for a franchise quarterback, and now the new leadership is taking another shot with Drake Maye. With all the tools at his disposal, Maye has the potential to be a standout NFL franchise quarterback. Although Jayden Daniels, the current Heisman Trophy winner, would undoubtedly bring excitement to a fan base desperate for it, Maye’s size, potential, and compatibility with Kliff Kingsbury’s offense makes him the more sensible option for this selection.

3. New England Patriots: QB Jayden Daniels, LSU

The Raiders will probably reach out to the Patriots, aiming to acquire Daniels in this position. I’ve heard that Daniels likes Las Vegas more than New England. Nevertheless, the reward for accurately determining the quarterback in this situation keeps drawing my attention. The Patriots might decline the offers and decide to go for it because this opportunity differs significantly from everything else.

The Patriots would almost surely pounce on Williams or Maye if either were available to them here, but for a franchise seeking a true rebuild, Daniels’ dual-threat talents and Heisman pedigree match nicely with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and could be the perfect departure from the stationary pocket passers who typified the previous era.

4. Minnesota Vikings: JJ McCarthy, Michigan 

Mock Trade: Vikings receive pick no. 4; Cardinals receive pick nos. 11, nos. 23, no. 108 and a seventh-rounder.

Yes, the price is very steep to get to this spot. However, Denver’s potential trade of All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II convinces Minnesota to move up to the fourth spot to secure their quarterback. McCarthy is a younger and more affordable option compared to Cousins and also brings more agility. Having Justin Jefferson as his primary receiver and Hockenson as another weapon puts him in an excellent position to thrive.

5. Los Angeles Chargers: WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

By stretching defenses vertically, Harrison’s skills will enhance the Chargers’ running game and improve the performance of the team’s other receivers. He will be a valuable asset in the downfield passing game, excelling in play-action situations. Additionally, he will be a reliable target in the middle of the field, capable of making big plays and scoring touchdowns. Malik Nabers is favored by certain teams over Harrison. Rome Odunze may be favored by others. However, Harrison will likely be the first wide receiver chosen, and he would be an ideal fit for both Justin Herbert and Jim Harbaugh.

6. New York Giants: WR Malik Nabers, LSU

Touchdowns are the determining factor in winning the game of football. Scoring touchdowns is not a strong suit for the Giants. Over the past three seasons, they have consistently ranked at the bottom in terms of first-quarter touchdowns. Scoring is a pressing need for New York, but the addition of Saquon Barkley to Philadelphia will further weaken their offense. To support their commitment to quarterback Daniel Jones, the Giants must enhance their lineup by adding dynamic playmakers who can create big plays. Nabers is known for his skill in quickly catching the ball and running, and his scoring capabilities extend to all areas of the field. Nabers will bring a much-needed explosive element to New York’s receiving corps, which has been lacking since Odell Beckham Jr. suffered an ankle injury in 2017.

7. Tennessee Titans: OT Joe Alt, Notre Dame

Despite the opinions of others, I’m confident that this is the best choice in the draft and I’m not wavering from it. His father, John Alt, was a former Chiefs tackle in the NFL, and he has inherited his football talent. Tennessee is in need of a left tackle. Working alongside Titans’ offensive line coach Bill Callahan can help Alt reach an elite status. Alt is a seamless plug-and-play choice at left tackle if he’s available, forming a highly promising duo with Peter Skoronski on the left side for the Titans. If he isn’t there, it’ll be interesting to see what the Titans end up doing.

8. Atlanta Falcons: Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama

An intriguing subplot in the 2024 NFL Draft will unfold when the first defensive player is chosen. Considering the defensive-oriented approach of head coach Raheem Morris, he may advocate for the selection of Turner due to the potential of the former Alabama star. Additionally, it should be noted that Calais Campbell, a 16-year NFL veteran and currently a free agent, led Atlanta in sacks (6.5) and quarterback hits (17) last season. This is a “need” pick with very high upside.

9. Indianapolis Colts: TE Brock Bowers, Georgia

Mock trade: Colts receive no. 9; Bears receive No. 15 overall, as well as nos. 82 and no. 116.

The Bears might seriously think about trading down if they can acquire additional picks on Day 2. It would be an uncommon occurrence for the Colts to move up, but if GM Chris Ballard is interested in Bowers, he may need to be assertive and jump ahead of the Jets.  Bowers would be an excellent security blanket for Anthony Richardson and could become Dallas Clark 2.0.  Bowers is capable of doing almost anything. He provides Coach Shane Steichen with an incredible opportunity and sets up second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson for success. This is a no-brainer!

10. New York Jets: OT JC Latham, Alabama

The Jets made some key moves this offseason by signing veteran left tackle Tyron Smith and trading for right tackle Morgan Moses. However, both players are 33 years old, recovering from injuries, and their contracts only extend until the end of the next season. So, it’s not far fetched that in terms of depth and the future drafting and OT would be a need. Latham’s skill in generating movement in the run game and his ability to widen his stance against edge rushers in pass protection might establish him as the top lineman in his class after three years.

11. Arizona Cardinals: CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

Since the Cardinals missed out on the top receivers in the early rounds, they can patiently wait for their next two first-round picks in the 20s to fill that position. Rather, they manage to acquire one of the top two corner positions, which is a significant requirement in Jonathan Gannon’s defensive strategy. Mitchell’s height and athleticism will greatly benefit him when facing challenging NFC West receivers. 

12. Philadelphia Eagles: CB Terrion Arnold, Alabama

Mock trade: Eagles receive pick no. 12; Denver receives pick no. 22, and no. 50.

The Eagles have a pair of second-round selections. A trade here makes sense for both teams if the Eagles are determined to land one of the two top corners. Following Mitchell’s departure just before the Eagles’ pick, GM Howie Roseman quickly secures yet another talented player from Alabama. There are some things that always stay the same. 

13. Las Vegas Raiders: OL Troy Fautanu, Washington

Similar to the Chargers, I expect that teams in the AFC West will exploit this year’s strong offensive talent pool to limit the playing time of the reigning two-time champions, the Chiefs, and their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Fautanu, who hails from Las Vegas, has the size and strength to excel as an interior guard while also possessing the agility and arm length to play as an offensive tackle if necessary. 

14. New Orleans Saints: OT Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State

The trend of selecting offensive linemen early in the draft continues with Fuaga, who is arguably the top run blocker in this group. Known for his remarkable strength and agility, he was a dominant presence at right tackle in Corvallis for the last two years, and he showcased his exceptional blocking skills at this year’s Senior Bowl. Given the Saints’ apprehension about Ryan Ramczyk’s health, acquiring Fuaga would be a sensible decision. The Saints are in a desperate situation when it comes to their offensive line, and I can’t help but think that a trade-up could be a viable solution.

15. Chicago Bears: EDGE Jared Verse, Florida State

I acknowledge that opting for Verse is an unconventional and tricky choice. However, from what I’ve been hearing, the Bears will choose him if they are unable to secure a top-three receiver. My prediction is that Chicago will opt for that route, given the absence of Odunze, Nabers, and Harrison in this mock. I was skeptical about Bowers joining the Bears, but now that he’s unavailable, the Bears won’t have the opportunity. The defense saw a significant transformation thanks to Montez Sweat’s performance last year. By adding Verse, Chicago hopes to improve their chances of becoming a legitimate playoff contender. 

16. Seattle Seahawks: QB Michael Penix Jr., Washington 

This is what people refer to as fate. Geno Smith on a 1-year 805,000 contract, and Penix will be in the wait, learning behind Smith. For a franchise, it doesn’t get much better than this situation. Many in the media view Penix as a Day 2 selection, but league sources suggest he will be drafted in the top half of the first round. The Southpaw is the most accurate pocket passer in this class and an ideal fit as UW offensive coordinator (Ryan Grubb, who is now Seattle’s OC) at No. 16.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars: CB Cooper Dejean, Iowa

Does DeJean play as a safety? Did you mean a cornerback? Is it possible to be both? Probably. While different NFL teams may have varying opinions, the Jaguars specifically require help in their secondary, and DeJean is a player who fits the profile of a top-tier defensive back. His coverage in 2023 resulted in a passer rating of 37.6, even lower than if a quarterback had thrown incomplete on every single attempt.

18. Cincinnati Bengals: DT Byron Murphy II, Texas

After losing DJ Reader in free agency, the Bengals must strengthen their defensive line on the inside. Murphy is a perfect match, as he was the second-highest-rated interior defender (91.1) in college football last year. Murphy’s exceptional strength and explosive start make him a more formidable pass rusher compared to other interior defensive prospects.

19. Kansas City Chiefs: WR Brian Thomas Jr., LSU

Mock trade: Chiefs receive no. 19; Rams receive nos. 32, and no. 64.

Making a big leap on the draft board, the Chiefs traded their top 2 picks to secure Thomas, a speedy athlete standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 209 pounds. Thomas topped college football in 2023 with 17 touchdown receptions. Given the uncertainties surrounding Rashee Rice and the high number of dropped passes by the Chiefs’ receivers last year, the team direly needs a skilled playmaker. In the draft, they chose a standout electric ball catcher.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers: Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia

The Steelers may have made changes at quarterback with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, but their long-standing dedication to building a strong offensive line is unlikely to waver during a draft class that is known for its exceptional linemen. Pittsburgh might be interested in bringing together Mims and his former Georgia teammate Jones, as Jones showed enough potential as a rookie starter at right tackle last year that some think he could excel on the left side in the long run. 

21. Miami Dolphins: OT Olumuyiwa Fashanu, Penn State

If the first 20 picks are dominated by quarterbacks and receivers, there’s a chance that Miami could still get one of the top offensive tackles at No. 21. Fashanu shares similarities with Christian Darrisaw (No. 23 overall in 2021) and Andre Dillard (No. 22 in 2019) when they were entering the league. Like them, Fashanu is somewhat inexperienced in his technique and did not have the dominant collegiate season that was anticipated. On the positive side, Fashanu has the potential to be an outstanding starter.

22. Denver Broncos: QB Bo Nix, Oregon

The general perception of Nix differs among the public. There are individuals who believe he is a good fit for Denver. There are those who doubt his level of success. The prevailing opinion is that Nix will most likely opt for Round 2. I agree with that sentiment, but if Penix is drafted as high as projected in this mock draft, the Broncos may be hesitant to take the chance of another team selecting Nix before them. Currently, it’s challenging to accurately assess their team. However, the Broncos will find a quarterback one way or another, and I don’t think they will spend too much time thinking about it.

23. Minnesota Vikings (from CLE through HOU): EDGE Laiatu Latu, UCLA 

The Vikings made a significant investment in free agent Jonathan Greenard, but transitioning to a 3-4 scheme will be difficult without additional support. Latu was a standout player at UCLA and is the most skilled pass rusher in this group. His durability concerns are the primary reason why he hasn’t been drafted earlier.

24. Dallas Cowboys: OL Graham Barton, Duke

With Tyron Smith now playing for the Jets and center Tyler Biadasz in Washington, Dallas is ready to field two backup special team players—Brock Hoffman and T.J. Bass plays at the center and left guard positions. The Cowboys desperately need talented players to start on their offensive line. Barton, who mainly played as a tackle for the Blue Devils, would transition to the center position in Dallas. He would be the most skilled center for the Cowboys since Travis Frederick. By making this pick, Dallas has the opportunity to regain its reputation as a team known for its strong blocking skills.

25. Green Bay Packers: OT Tyler Guyton, Oklahoma

One thing we can say about GM Brian Gutekunst is that he won’t choose a receiver at this position. Guyton’s addition would greatly enhance the line’s potential and adaptability, especially with the absence of LT David Bakhtiari and G Jon Runyan Jr. Guyton had experience playing left tackle for the Sooners, although he primarily played on the right side. In Green Bay, there are options available, including the versatile OT Zach Tom, who has experience playing on both ends of the line.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: EDGE Chop Robinson, Penn State

According to scouts, there is a strong possibility that Robinson won’t be available at the 26th pick, as he is receiving significant interest from teams in the middle of the first round. However, he is present in this situation, and the Buccaneers need to find a replacement for Shaquil Barrett on the defensive line. Robinson’s first-step quickness is outstanding and adds to his explosive nature. While he only had four sacks in 2023, his pressure rate of 18% would have ranked fourth in the FBS if he had met the qualification.

Robinson is a promising pass-rusher who may need some time in a rotation as he continues to develop. However, his strong edge-rushing abilities have the potential to challenge Tampa Bay’s opponents.

27. Arizona Cardinals (from HOU): CB Nate Wiggins, Clemson

The Cardinals may consider selecting a pass rusher such as Chop Robinson, but since he’s not available in this mock draft, the need for a cornerback is equally significant. In contrast, Wiggins, the lively and athletic Wiggins, is the preferred choice. He has an abundance of athleticism, a fearless playing style, exceptional ball-tracking skills, and despite his slender build, he is not hesitant to make tackles. He is persistent and never gives up on his performances. Arizona fans can expect a more physical playing style from Wiggins, reminiscent of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round in 2008.

28. Buffalo Bills: WR Adonai Mitchell, Texas

It would surprise me if the Bills didn’t choose a receiver in the first round. It is possible that they will trade up to get one, but given the wide range of choices, I don’t think it will be necessary. At the NFL Combine, Mitchell completed the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds, earning him an athleticism score of 91. This impressive performance placed him in third position among all participants. He is seen as a potential franchise-level NFL receiver, possessing the right combination of size, speed, and the ability to catch passes in any location near him. With outstanding performances in both the College Football Playoff semifinals for Texas and the CFP national championship for Georgia, he is widely regarded as the top choice for the Bills.

29. Detroit Lions: DT Johnny Newton, Illinois

Newton’s ability to rush the passer from the interior is exceptional, reminiscent of Gerald McCoy and Tommie Harris, as he effortlessly slips past blockers and generates significant power. Adding Newton to a line that features rising star Alim McNeill and veteran acquisition D.J. Reader gives the Lions formidable depth and disruptive ability between the tackles. He greatly enhances Detroit’s defense, elevating Aidan Hutchinson’s performance while also compensating for weaknesses in the secondary and strengthening their ability to defend against agile quarterbacks running through the middle.

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from BAL): OL Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon

Mock Trade: Buccaneers receive no. 30 pick; Ravens receive: Nos. 57, and no. 89.

Following our earlier move to address a major defensive need, we are now doing the same for the offense. By utilizing one of our two third-round selections, we make a bold move, leaping from our late second-round pick to acquire a highly talented center towards the end of the first round. The Buccaneers have really felt the absence of Ryan Jensen in the vital center of their offensive line, and JPJ possesses all the necessary physical and mental qualities to seamlessly step into that role right from the start.

31. San Francisco 49ers: CB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama 

The Niners are strengthening their already outstanding defense by choosing McKinstry, a strong and aggressive cornerback with excellent size and physicality. Kool-Aid will provide the team with numerous choices for how it uses its secondary group. McKinstry will join a powerful group of cornerbacks that includes Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir, Ambry Thomas, Rock Ya-Sin, and Isaac Yiadom.

32. Los Angeles Rams: EDGE Darius Robinson, Missouri

Since 2016, when they drafted Jared Goff, the Los Angeles Rams have not made a first-round pick, but that could change in the upcoming NFL Draft. Darius Robinson is the pick here. The Rams badly need another rusher coming off the edge and Robinson is the best option in this spot. If the Rams wouldn't have traded with the Chiefs, getting Aaron Donald's replacement would've been the pick. The Rams would be unwise to leave the first round without at least one edge rusher to help generate pressure against guards, the Rams need to add a big man or two up front.

For those of you who haven’t watched the Atlanta Braves play baseball over the past couple of years, here is an update: regardless of who is injure currently in a slump, the Braves continue to win games.

Sean Murphy has been sidelined with a strained oblique since the season’s second game. The team’s ace, Spencer Strider, underwent season-ending elbow surgery after only two starts, and recently, Ozzie Albies joined the injured list because of a fractured big toe. The Braves have faced significant challenges with injuries at the start of the season.

In case you’re not familiar with the Braves’ lineup, three of their eight All-Stars from 2023 are currently unable to play. One might assume that such absences would spell disaster at the season’s start. However, Atlanta began Sunday night’s game against the Texas Rangers boasting the best record in the majors at 14-5, and they were on a six-game winning streak. This impressive run included a road sweep of the Houston Astros, where they excelled in the late innings through formidable offense and bullpen strength.

Here are my four takeaways about how the Braves have continued to thrive even with the setback of injuries continuing to mount.

1. Braves bullpen is a legitimate threat

The ongoing project to ensure the bullpen is championship-ready has been successful this season. The results they are achieving align perfectly with the goals set by Alex Anthopoulos, the general manager and president of baseball operations, who prioritized adding power-armed relievers and enhancing balance from both sides during the offseason. In logical terms, if the weakest link of your team during the playoffs is the bullpen, you must address and resolve the issue.

Before Sunday, Atlanta’s bullpen ERA of 3.42 ranked 10th in the majors, which didn’t fully reflect its usual performance. Out of 26 earned runs attributed to Braves relievers, 15 were conceded in a three-game series against the Mets from April 9 to April 11, following a period of heavy use. This stretch included back-to-back games against Arizona, with Strider’s four-inning last start and Max Fried’s 4 1/3-inning outing where he allowed seven runs.

Prior to Sunday, the Braves’ bullpen boasted a frugal 1.73 ERA in all matchups, excluding their three games against the Mets, conceding 11 earned runs across 57 innings. Only Detroit, with a 1.65 ERA, and Cleveland, with a 2.11 ERA, have bullpen ERAs under 2.81. It’s safe to say that the Braves’ bullpen play has been at an elite level to start the season.

2. Sale and López have been Elite to start the season

There is a general agreement among Braves enthusiasts that Acuña and Strider are the two most vital players for the team as they strive for their seventh straight division title and a significant run in the postseason.

The Braves’ schedule has provided Sale and López with additional rest up to this point. But that doesn’t mean that either of these two pitchers are being limited in their performances. In each of his first three starts, López has completed exactly six innings. Sale pitched into the sixth inning in his first two starts and then completed seven innings in his subsequent two starts.

However, the performance of former reliever Reynaldo López has been unexpectedly outstanding since becoming the fifth starter at the beginning of the season. López, who hadn’t started a game since 2021, has been pitching exceptionally well in the early season, with a 0.50 ERA, the lowest among pitchers with three or more starts in the majors.

3. Great catcher play

Travis d’Arnaud’s value has become even more apparent with Sean Murphy’s absence in the lineup. Although the veteran catcher hasn’t been particularly known for his power throughout his career, he had an impressive game on Friday, hitting three home runs, and continued his success by adding another home run in Saturday’s 5-2 win. Despite the recent power surge, he has consistently remained the clubhouse leader signal caller since his arrival at the Braves in 2020.

Their catching position is widely regarded as the best in the majors, and they consistently receive both strong defensive play and productive performances from it. d’Arnaud has been shouldering most of the catching duties while Murphy is on the injured list, while Tromp, a Triple-A call-up, is impressing with his self-assuredness in handling pitchers and making game-calling decisions.

Regarding Sean Murphy, oblique injuries can lead to persistent problems if a player returns prematurely, similar to what happened with Brian McCann in 2011. However, in this case, with d’Arnaud securing the position during Murphy’s absence, the Braves are likely to be cautious with Murphy, who has not yet been cleared to begin batting practice. It appears more probable that his return could be expected sometime in May.

4. The Braves stacked lineup

The Braves dominated their opponents, scoring 39 runs while only allowing 19, during a consecutive six-game winning streak. Additionally, they emerged victorious in eight out of their last ten games prior to Sunday. In that game, Marcell Ozuna of the Braves solidified his position as the MLB leader in home runs, hitting a three-run homer in the opening inning and bringing his total to nine homers and 27 RBIs. The Braves were ahead 3-0 when rookie spot-starter Darius Vines surrendered four runs from two home runs in the fourth inning, leading to the Rangers’ 6-4 victory.

Once again, the Braves are leading the league in multiple offensive categories, including average (.283), OBP (.353), slugging (.475), and OPS (.828), just like they did in 2023. 

Despite a relatively modest output from superstar leadoff hitter and reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr., who recorded one home run, nine stolen bases, and a .799 OPS over 19 games before Sunday.

The remarkable aspect is that the Braves’ lineup is so robust and powerful that it likely went unnoticed that slugger Matt Olsen had a 1-for-16 stretch in the five games preceding Sunday, with no home runs and 15 strikeouts. Additionally, he posted a .195 batting average over the last 11 games. Despite these unimpressive statistics, Atlanta managed an 8-3 record during this period and scored five or more runs in nine of the games.

At this time, teams have the chance to engage in negotiations with players who are about to become unrestricted free agents. Finalizing or signing contracts during the legal tampering period is impossible, but agreements can be made and often become public knowledge. The start of the legal tampering period on Monday at noon unleashed a frenzy of activity in free agency. NFL insiders were active on Twitter on Monday, rapidly posting tweets throughout the afternoon and evening as multiple teams announced numerous moves.

Unlike other teams, the Dallas Cowboys have faced online criticism for not announcing any new additions and appearing inactive. On March 6, the Cowboys extended the contract of defensive tackle Carlton Davis, but they have only officially announced the signing of one free agent, Trent Sieg.

Last year, the Cowboys welcomed 28-year-old Sieg to their team, where he took over for Jake McQuaide. His role in the special teams unit contributed to punter Bryan Anger’s achieving the highest net yards-per-punt average in the league. Additionally, it played a crucial part in kicker Brandon Aubrey's record-breaking performance during his debut NFL season.

In contrast to their NFC East rivals, who made notable acquisitions on the opening day of free agency, the Cowboys opted to stay on the sidelines and made no transactions. Their scorecard showed a discouraging minus-4, as Tony Pollard, Tyler Biadasz, Dorance Armstrong, and Dante Fowler Jr. all left without any new arrivals.

In addition to securing Dak Prescott with a new contract, the Cowboys are now urgently searching for a running back, left tackle, center, and improved size in their defense, which was exposed in the surprising playoff defeat against the Green Bay Packers.

While the rest of the NFC East teams were ready and motivated, the Cowboys seemed negligent or apathetic. Without wasting time, the Philadelphia Eagles bolstered their team by acquiring running back Saquon Barkley from the Giants and Pro Bowl pass rusher Bryce Huff from the Jets. The New York Giants fans had little time to feel sad because they made a trade to acquire Brian Burns, an exceptional edge-rusher. The Washington Commanders, under the leadership of new head coach Dan Quinn, successfully recruited several players from the Cowboys, such as Biadasz, Armstrong, and Fowler Jr., in addition to securing the signing of five more players, including starting running back Austin Ekeler.

According to reports, the Cowboys attempted to re-sign Pollard, but his asking price was too high. The Cincinnati Bengals signed running back Zack Moss, who previously played for the Indianapolis Colts, to a two-year, $8 million contract.

Per a report, Moss' contract was described as stretching beyond their comfort zone.

Meanwhile, Dallas’s lack of activity in the free agency market has caused social media to criticize owner Jerry Jones, especially after his comments about “going all in” heading into 2024.

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky said Tuesday morning, “The Cowboys standing pat is a shocker. The Eagles definitely jumped them as far as winning the NFC East this season.”

To give credit where it's due, it took Jones until the second week of last year’s league season to make strategic trades for receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Stephon Gilmore after the initial frenzy of big-name signings had passed.

But in January, Jerry promised to be “all in” this year. So far, it’s hard not to feel like he’s already thrown in the towel.

The Cowboys are at a disadvantage in free agency as they have one of the lowest cap spaces in the league. However, in previous instances, we have witnessed teams finding innovative ways to work around salary cap limitations. Because of Jones' remarks, there was an unreasonable anticipation among Cowboys fans for Dallas to take a more aggressive approach in bolstering a roster that was thoroughly embarrassed in the NFC wild-card round.

The Cowboys have a little over $2.2 million in cap space, but they are just $809,110 below the effective cap space, as reported by Over The Cap. According to OTC, effective cap refers to the cap space a team will have left after adding at least 51 players and its projected rookie class to the roster.

Moreover, in the case of the Cowboys, the term "all-in" could signify relying on the possibility of a skilled team that previously won the NFC East in 2023 having the ability to repeat their triumph in 2024. Despite losing Pollard, Biadasz, and possibly Smith and Gilmore, the Cowboys still have several valuable players and don't have too many apparent gaps to fill. While it is necessary for them to add more depth to the roster soon, the fact remains.

With only one year left on his current contract, Dak Prescott is looking for a contract extension that could make him the highest-paid quarterback in the league. With his fifth-year option nearing its end, CeeDee Lamb is set to reach free agency in 2024. Micah Parsons has two more years on his rookie contract, which includes the fifth-year option. This offseason, he is eligible for extension negotiations.

Those are three critical components of Dallas’ future. When giving out pricey extensions, these players at the three positions receive the largest contracts. Assuming that each player is granted AAVs surpassing previous records, Prescott could cost $56 million per year, Lamb's value could be $31 million, and Parsons could demand $36 million, amounting to a combined total of $123 million for the trio. The Cowboys have hindered resources to allocate towards free agency.

Despite the Cowboys' unexpected choice not to select Henry, Barkley, or other highly-rated running backs, it is conceivable that they are considering the running back position as an opportunity to cut costs. The Cowboys ranked fifth in spending on running backs last year, largely due to the $10.091 million franchise tag on Pollard. None of the four teams ahead of Dallas made it to the postseason. It would be logical to fill that gap by acquiring a mix of inexpensive, experienced players and promising rookies.

With seven draft picks still in hand for 2024, the Cowboys can rely on these picks to address crucial team needs that cannot be fulfilled through free agency.

Dallas will still enter the 2024 season with lofty expectations, just like every year, including trying to win a Super Bowl. Expecting them to go “all-in” on free agency seems far-fetched.

The NFL offseason is in full swing, with teams releasing players to create cap space and making trades to address their needs before free agency begins.

We're approaching the 2024 NFL draft, which will take place in Detroit, Michigan, from April 26th to April 28th, just a couple of months from now. However, we are currently amid the draft season, and there is an abundance of storylines, particularly surrounding this group of quarterbacks.

As NFL free agency starts on March 13th, teams will aim to bolster their rosters by making strategic signings. Those teams with obvious weaknesses will look to draft prospects in order to fill those gaps.

The draft’s first round is always full of surprises and intrigue, especially when free agency has not yet started. Some teams may fill their biggest needs with veteran signings, while others may look to trade up or down to target their preferred prospects. In this mock draft, I tried to project how the first round might unfold based on each team’s current rosters and needs. Here are my picks for the first 32 selections of the draft before free agency shakes things up. I have six quarterbacks going in the first round, which is a lot, but not unheard of. So let’s get started and see who goes where.

Welcome to my first mock draft of the year, where I will try to predict how the first round of the NFL draft will unfold. Let’s have some fun and see what trades and quarterback moves we can expect in this draft.

1. Chicago Bears (from CAR): QB Caleb Williams, USC

It would send a shock wave around the NFL if the Chicago Bears don’t draft standout quarterback Caleb Williams at No. 1 at this point. There has been continuous chatter around the league that the Bears have been shopping Justin Fields around, so all signs point to the Bears selecting Williams here. Williams said he’d be “excited” to be drafted by the Bears, where he acknowledged it would be a good fit for any rookie. He’s also been studying some Chicago greats in Michael Jordan and Walter Payton, wanting to have a similar impact on the NFL.

2. Washington Commanders: QB Drake Maye, North Carolina

The Washington Commanders have a tough decision to make with the second overall pick in the draft: do they go with Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels as their future quarterback? Both prospects have strengths and weaknesses, and the Commanders have kept their cards close to their chest. They could also trade down and acquire more picks, but that would mean missing out on a potential franchise QB. I’m leaning towards Maye as the better fit for Washington. He has some question marks but also has a rare combination of size, arm strength, mobility, and accuracy. He could thrive in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense, which is designed to take advantage of his skill set. Daniels is a solid prospect too, but he doesn’t have the same upside as Maye. Washington has a lot of former quarterbacks on their coaching staff, so they should be able to develop whoever they pick. But I think Maye is the one they will ultimately choose.

3. New England Patriots: QB Jayden Daniels, LSU

The Patriots have a golden opportunity to land the best quarterback in the draft class at No. 3. Many fans who are enamored with Caleb Williams and Drake Maye have overlooked Jayden Daniels, the Heisman Trophy winner from LSU, But Daniels has shown exceptional poise, accuracy, and mobility against top-notch college defenses. He is the perfect fit for the Patriots’ system and culture. Alternatively, the Patriots could draft Marvin Harrison Jr., the talented wide receiver from Ohio State, and look for a veteran quarterback in free agency. They just traded Mac Jones to the Jaguars for a late-round pick, so they need someone to compete with Baily Zappe, who is not ready to be the starter.

4. Arizona Cardinals: WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

The Arizona Cardinals are in a brilliant spot if the first three picks of the draft are all quarterbacks. They don’t have to worry about trading down or missing out on a top prospect. They can just take the best player available, who happens to fill a major need for them. That player is Harrison, the dynamic wide receiver from Ohio State. Harrison would give the Cardinals’ offense an additional dimension and a reliable target for Kyler Murray. He has the speed, size, and skills to be a star in the NFL. With Harrison on board, the Cardinals could have all the weapons that Kyler Murray needs and set themselves up to be one of the most explosive offenses in the league.

5. Los Angeles Chargers: WR Rome Odunze, Washington

The Chargers could look for a new wide receiver in the upcoming draft. Mike Williams is likely to be cut to save some cap space, and Keenan Allen’s future is not guaranteed. He is still a significant player but not getting any younger, and Father Time is undefeated. Quentin Johnston had a lackluster first year (38 rec, 431 yds, 2 TDs) and has to improve his performance. Odunze would be a nice fit for the team. He is a talented receiver with a big body (6-foot-2 and 212 pounds), crisp routes, dependable hands, and a knack for making contested catches.

6. New York Giants: WR Malik Nabers, LSU

The Giants had a tough decision to make at pick 11, with most of the top offensive prospects already gone. They could trade down or take a chance on QB J.J. McCarthy, but I believe they will decide to go with Malik Nabers, the best receiver available. Nabers is a game-changer for the Giants, who have lacked a true WR1 for a long time. He can dominate in the air with his strong hands and body control and line up anywhere on the field. Nabers is exactly what the Giants need to boost their offense and give Daniel Jones a reliable target.

7. Tennessee Titans: OT Joe Alt, Notre Dame

The Titans finally address their biggest need by selecting Joe Alt, the best left tackle in the draft, with their first pick. Alt has the size, strength, and technique to dominate at the next level and keep Will Levis upright in the pocket. With no elite wide receivers available, the Titans will wisely opt for the cornerstone of their offensive line for years to come.

8. Atlanta Falcons: QB J.J. McCarthy, Michigan

The Falcons are being connected to nearly every quarterback on the market. However, if they don't secure Kirk Cousins or make a trade for Justin Fields, it seems likely that they will consider drafting a quarterback. McCarthy possesses the skills and talent that could establish him as a franchise quarterback for years to come. Atlanta had the opportunity to meet with the former Michigan signal-caller at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, where he showcased his skills with an impressive showing on the field. McCarthy's three seasons in Ann Arbor saw him amass an impressive 6,231 passing yards, throwing for 48 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. Many experts are predicting him to be chosen within the top 12 picks, with the Falcons being a logical choice for him.

9. Chicago Bears: EDGE Dallas Turner, Alabama

The Bears are hoping to land a top receiver with the ninth pick, but they miss out on Rome Odunze and Malik Nabers, who go in the first six picks. However, they get a great consolation prize in Dallas Turner, a long, athletic edge rusher who fits Matt Eberflus’ defensive philosophy. Turner has 34 3/8th inch arms and impressive agility, and he said he likes the Bears’ scheme that gives pass rushers “freedom and opportunities”. The Bears need someone to pair with Montez Sweat, who made the Pro Bowl last year, and Turner could be the perfect partner for him. Turner has the potential to be a dominant force for the Bears’ defense.

10. New York Jets: OT Olu Fashanu, Penn State

With only Joe Alt off the board so far in the OT room, the Jets have a wide array of offensive tackle prospects to choose from. Fashanu, Taliese Fuaga, or even JC Latham - any of them could be the one to go either way in this situation. Fashanu is my choice. I'll stick with him. While he may have work to do in the run game, his pass-protection skills are excellent. The team needs Aaron Rodgers' presence on the field to effectively pass the ball, making Fashanu's ability to pass protect a valuable asset.

11. Minnesota Vikings: CB Terrion Arnold, Alabama

The Vikings' hopes were dashed as the first four quarterbacks were chosen in the top eight picks, leaving them without their desired options. With those players gone, they carefully consider their options and ultimately decide to go with the best available player. On my board, that player is Alabama CB Terrion Arnold. He can play inside and outside with aggressiveness in both the running game and when the ball is in the air. Coming from a Nick Saban defense, Arnold already knows how to thrive in both man and zone concepts, including man-match principles, all of which Brian Flores has shown over his time in the NFL. While cornerback may not be the Vikings' top priority, they made a brilliant choice in selecting Arnold, adding a valuable asset to their roster.

12. San Francisco 49ers (from DEN): OT Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State

Trade Details:

• 49ers get No. 12

• Broncos get Nos. 31, 63, 216

The first trade of the draft. With the 49ers having a lot of draft capital (11 draft picks), this allows them to make this move. The 49ers made a smart move by trading up with the Broncos to get the top offensive tackle in the draft. They only gave up a second-round pick and a sixth-round pick to jump 19 spots and land Fuaga, who is ready to start at right tackle from Day 1. Fuaga has the size, athleticism, and technique to play at a high level in the NFL. He can also slide inside to guard if needed or take over the left tackle spot when Trent Williams hangs up his cleats. Fuaga is a rare prospect who can do it all, and the 49ers got him without sacrificing much of their 2024 draft capital.

13. Dallas Cowboys (from LV): QB Michael Penix Jr., Washington

Trade Details:

• Cowboys get No. 13

• Raiders get No. 24, 2025 first-round pick

Imagine a scenario where the Cowboys decide to move on from Dak Prescott after the 2024 season and look for a new franchise quarterback in the draft. That’s the premise of this hypothetical mock draft: Dallas selects Washington Michael Penix Jr. with the 13th overall pick. Penix is a rare talent who combines a strong arm, a quick release, and a high football IQ. He can make all the throws, scramble when needed, and lead an offense with poise and confidence. He’s also a lefty, which adds an extra element of intrigue and challenge for defenses. Penix has been one of college football’s most productive and efficient passers, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in the last two seasons. He has also shown tremendous resilience and toughness, overcoming two ACL injuries and leading Washington to its best season in decades in 2023. Penix is not a perfect prospect, however. His durability is a cause for concern; He also has to adjust to playing under center and reading NFL defenses, which are more complex and faster than what he faced in the Pac-12. But if the Cowboys are willing to take a gamble on Penix’s potential and develop him behind Prescott for a year or two, they could have their next star quarterback in the making. Penix has the charisma, the skills, and the mindset to thrive in Dallas and become Jerry Jones’ new favorite player.

14. New Orleans Saints: LT Troy Fautanu, Washington

In order to improve their offense, the Saints should focus on upgrading their offensive line to provide better protection for Derek Carr and strengthen their running game. Fautanu has the potential to be a valuable resource in addressing that. Not only does he possess the qualities of an excellent left guard, but he also has the potential to excel as a tackle, making him a versatile player. The Saints need improvement in both areas, and Fautanu could play a crucial role in finding a solution.

15. Indianapolis Colts: TE Brock Bowers, Georgia

The Colts' top priority this offseason is to add explosive playmakers to their offensive roster. Bowers truly embodies the essence of that undertaking. Considering him as more of an offensive weapon rather than just a tight end should ease concerns about his positional value. His steady hands, a knack for gaining yards after catching the ball, and exceptional body control when running routes make him the ideal candidate for the No. 15 overall pick. Key to furthering the development of QB Anthony Richardson is providing him with opportunities like this, which are easy to come by. While CB Quinyon Mitchell and EDGE Jared Verse were also being considered, the decision to choose Bowers was too difficult to resist.

16. Seattle Seahawks: DT Johnny Newton, Illinois

Since Michael Penix Jr. and Troy Fautanu were unexpectedly unavailable, the Seahawks decide to choose the best interior defensive line prospect remaining, assuming their inability to re-sign Leonard Williams in free agency. Newton, towering at 6-foot-2 and weighing 304 pounds, adds to Seattle's youthful defense, reuniting him with star cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars: CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

After releasing Darious Williams last week, the Jaguars have an urgent need for a cornerback this offseason. However, they can benefit from the abundance of offensive talent in the draft, which gives them a strong edge in the first half of the first round. In this mock, they had the luxury of choosing from almost all the cornerbacks in the class. Mitchell has proven himself in every aspect, with a stellar college career, a superb performance at the Senior Bowl, and a remarkable showing at the combine. The Jaguars would not think twice about picking him if he is still available at No. 17.

18. Cincinnati Bengals: OL Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon

The Bengals have a history of ignoring the interior line in the early rounds of the draft. The last time they spent a high pick on a guard was in 2012, when they had two first-rounders and took Kevin Zeitler. But they let him walk in free agency along with Andrew Whitworth, a huge mistake that changed the course of the franchise. Now, the Bengals are more willing to adapt to the modern game, and that’s why they select Jackson Powers-Johnson here. He can play center, allowing Ted Karras to compete with Cordell Volson for a guard spot. This means the Bengals will have to find a solution at right tackle if they don’t bring back Jonah Williams, but Powers-Johnson is too talented to pass up while the franchise quarterback is coming off another serious injury.

19. Los Angeles Rams: EDGE Jared Verse, Florida State

The Rams would be ecstatic if Verse fell to them at this spot. He is one of the best pass rushers in this class, a great fit for the Rams’ defensive scheme, and a formidable partner for Byron Young. He has tremendous power as a rusher, as shown by his impressive college stats. He had nine sacks in each of the past two seasons. Verse’s pick in the middle of the first round is an ideal combination of positional value, talent, and the Rams’ needs, boosting their chances of success.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers: DT Byron Murphy II, Texas

The Steelers have two glaring holes at offensive line and cornerback, but they also know how to draft for value. That’s why they can’t afford to miss out on Murphy, the best defensive lineman in the class, who somehow slips to them at 20. Murphy is a dominant force inside, who can disrupt the run and the pass with his power and quickness. He would be a great replacement for Adams and Watts, who are leaving in free agency and form a formidable duo with Benton. The Steelers would be getting a steal and a star with Murphy.

21. Miami Dolphins: OL Graham Barton, Duke

Barton is a versatile lineman who can play anywhere on the offensive line. He is a perfect fit for the Dolphins, who may lose up to four starters to retirement or free agency after the 2024 season. Barton has the size, strength and technique to handle any assignment, whether it’s protecting the quarterback or opening holes for the running game. He is also durable and reliable, having started every game in his college career. The Dolphins need to invest in their offensive line to improve their offense, and Barton is a smart and safe pick in the first round.

22. Philadelphia Eagles: CB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama

Despite the medical tests at the NFL Combine pointing to a Jones fracture in his right foot, Philadelphia is still going to be my pick here. McKinstry, a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide, solidified his reputation as one of the best defensive backs in the country over the past two seasons. McKinstry's impressive stats of 22 pass breakups and an interception over two seasons highlight his growth as a defender, suggesting he has the potential to become an all-pro player at the next level. Despite skipping the on-field workouts at the combine, McKinstry will showcase his skills during his Pro Day on March 20, just before he undergoes surgery prior to the NFL draft in April. With that timetable, McKinstry would be fully prepared just in time for the upcoming training camp in the summer.

23. Houston Texans (from CLE): CB Cooper DeJean, Iowa

With Houston's focus on improving their defense, the choice was narrowed down to DeJean, Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins, and Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson. Ultimately, the Texans should prioritize adding a tall and agile outside cornerback to complement Derek Stingley, rather than opting for a smaller, speedier cornerback or another edge rusher at the moment. This becomes even more crucial if they cannot retain Steven Nelson or acquire a seasoned veteran through signing or trading in the offseason. With his athleticism and ability to play both safety and special teams, DeJean is the perfect candidate to address the secondary's glaring weakness. In 2023, the Texans had one of the highest numbers of passing yards allowed, ranking 10th, and also gave up a high average yards per attempt, ranking fifth. This highlights the importance of DeJean's ability to intercept passes, which would be valuable regardless of where DeMeco Ryans and defensive coordinator Matt Burke decide to position him.

The Raiders missed out on the top four quarterbacks in the draft, as they were all taken before the 13th pick. They traded down to get more picks for the 2025 season but still landed a great player in Amarius Mims. He weighed 340 pounds at the NFL Combine and was impressed with his strength and agility. The Raiders want to beef up their offensive line and make it more dominant. Mims would fit in well as their right tackle and help them achieve that goal. Plus, they have an extra first-round pick for the 2025 draft, which gives them more flexibility to pursue their future franchise QB.

25. Green Bay Packers: EDGE Chop Robinson, Penn State

Chop Robinson would be a surprise pick for the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Many would expect them to address other positions, such as cornerback, receiver, or offensive line after they had already invested heavily in their edge rushers. But the Packers won’t be able to pass up on the opportunity to add a dynamic and young talent to their defense. Robinson, who goes by the nickname Chop, was a dominant force at Michigan State, where he racked up 24 sacks and 36 tackles for loss in his last two seasons. He also impressed scouts with his athleticism at the combine, where he posted the second-highest Relative Athletic Score among edge rushers. Robinson is only 21 years old and has plenty of room to grow and refine his skills. The Packers love to draft players with high ceilings at premium positions, and Robinson fits that mold perfectly. He may not have the ideal size for a Packers edge rusher, but he makes up for it with his speed and burst off the edge. Robinson will join a talented group of edge rushers that includes Lukas Van Ness, Rashan Gary and Preston Smith. Van Ness was the Packers’ first-round pick last year, and he showed great potential as a rookie. Gary was rewarded with a big contract extension after leading the team in sacks in 2023. Smith agreed to restructure his deal to stay with the Packers for another year. With Robinson in the mix, the Packers will have a formidable pass rush that can terrorize opposing quarterbacks and help their secondary. The Packers may have surprised some people with their pick, but they followed their draft philosophy of taking the best or most upside player available, regardless of immediate needs. Robinson has the potential to be a star in the NFL, and the Packers should be excited to bring in a prospect of his caliber.

26. Kansas City Chiefs (from TB): WR Brian Thomas Jr., LSU

• Chiefs get Nos. 26, 203 and 2025 sixth-round pick

In this particular scenario, Kansas City executes a trade to secure the services of a supremely talented wide receiver from LSU, aiming to have an instant positive influence on the team. At the combine, Thomas showcased his exceptional speed by completing the 40-yard dash in just 4.33 seconds, leaving everyone impressed. Prior to that, he had an outstanding final season in Baton Rouge, scoring a remarkable 17 touchdowns. If Thomas and Patrick Mahomes develop a strong connection early on, his addition to Kansas City's offense could play a crucial role in securing a third consecutive Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs next season.

27. Arizona Cardinals (from HOU): DL Darius Robinson, Missouri

There are multiple paths the Cardinals could choose to go. The Alabama tackle, J.C. While Latham could work, the Cardinals are looking for a tackle with better mobility. Medical concerns are associated with Laiatu Latu. With his ability to play effectively as a defender both on the edge and in the interior, Robinson is a valuable asset for the Cardinals, who require talent in both areas. In his final season at Missouri, he recorded 8.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss, consistently improving his performance throughout his college career.

28. Buffalo Bills: WR Troy Franklin, Oregon

Gabe Davis appears to be on his way out in free agency, based on his partially goodbye message shared on social media. The Bills held meetings with multiple wide receivers during the combine, one of them being Franklin. Oregon had a successful season, and Franklin contributed significantly. In 13 games, he showcased his skills by achieving 81 catches, 1,383 yards, and 14 touchdowns. Much like Davis, Franklin can stretch the field, but what sets him apart is his already impressive route-running skills and the potential for further development. Franklin has the potential to be the second receiver in Buffalo's offense on Day 1, and could eventually become the top receiver.

29. Detroit Lions: CB Kamari Lassiter, Georgia

Lassiter is an adaptable outside CB who can play in different schemes. He has length, speed and experience in man coverage, which are essential qualities for the Lions’ most urgent offseason need. He is also a great tackler who can aggressively defend against the run and short passes. Cooper Beebe would be a nice pick here, but I would gladly go with Lassiter, who seems ready to start in Week 1 for Detroit.

30. Baltimore Ravens: WR Keon Coleman, Florida State

Keon Coleman, a wide receiver for Florida State, stands at 6 foot 4 and weighs 220 pounds. He possesses a formidable blend of speed, athleticism, and power, which he utilizes to dominate opponents with his diverse skill set and knack for winning contested catches. During the 2023 season with the Seminoles, Coleman had an impressive performance, making 50 catches for 658 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns while Florida State remained undefeated in the regular season. Coleman accumulated a total of 115 receptions, 1,506 yards, and 19 touchdowns during his time at Michigan State and Florida State.

31. Denver Broncos (from SF): QB Bo Nix, Oregon

After trading for Sean Payton last year, the Broncos do not have a second-round pick in this year’s draft. Denver gains an additional pick in the second round by moving down from the 12th overall spot, ensuring they still secure their future quarterback in this mock scenario. Nix is a great fit for Payton's offensive system, which is why he has been a popular choice for the Broncos in mock drafts. Denver secures Nix as a replacement after parting ways with Russell Wilson.

32. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from KC): OL JC Latham, Alabama

The Buccaneers direly need a left guard upgrade, and considering the talent of Latham, who is still available, I cannot miss the opportunity to shift such a dominant and strong blocker to the interior from his typical tackle position. At age 21, he would instantly enhance Tampa Bay’s struggling, running game while offering exceptional pass protection skills as an interior blocker. This is an incredible steal in terms of talent, especially with the addition of an extra third-round pick, and it addresses one of the Bucs' major needs in the starting lineup.

We are in the final phase of the 2023 NFL season, with the playoff race in full swing. In the early window of Sunday’s schedule, two games featured teams currently positioned in the postseason field: Browns versus Texans and Lions versus Vikings.

With a come-from-behind 30-24 win in Minnesota, the Lions have emerged as the champions of the NFC North, marking their first division title since their NFC Central victory in 1993. The Browns established a commanding 36-7 lead and ultimately secured a 36-22 victory in Houston. Cleveland’s quarterback, Joe Flacco, achieved his third consecutive 300-yard passing game, while wide receiver Amari Cooper set a franchise record with 265 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the triumph.

The Cowboys struggled on the road once again

The Cowboys have lost two straight against solid opponents. The upcoming game against the Lions becomes more crucial, even though all hope is still possible. If the Cowboys were to suffer a third consecutive loss, it would undoubtedly thrust them into a pronounced downward spiral during the most critical period of the year. By achieving a victory against a playoff team, they can leave the losses in the past.

Despite their immense talent, it isn’t easy to place great confidence in Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys this postseason. This loss will make it considerably challenging for them to secure victory in the NFC East, especially after the Eagles triumph over the Giants yesterday with a score of 33-25.

The Dallas Cowboys have two remaining regular-season games before the playoffs. On Saturday, they will play their last home game of the year against the Detroit Lions, a team currently performing well and showing continuous improvement. Monday night saw a display of their expertise, talent, and mental prowess, resulting in five interceptions, four of which were taken from Purdy before he was forcefully removed from the game by a brutal hit from the Ravens.

Cleveland Browns bolster playoff hopes

With Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback, the Cleveland Browns improved to a record of 3-1 by defeating the Houston Texans 36-22. The final score does not accurately reflect the game’s outcome, as Cleveland substituted their main players when they were leading 36-7 in the fourth quarter. After being subbed in, Davis Mills took charge for the Texans and guided them to two consecutive touchdown drives, capitalizing on a successful onside kick. Nonetheless, it proved to be insufficient as the game progressed. 

The Flacco-Amari Cooper connection took center stage in this win, with the two players teaming up for two touchdowns and demonstrating an unstoppable performance all day. Flacco successfully threw 27 out of 42 passes for 368 yards, resulting in three touchdowns and two interceptions. Meanwhile, Cooper made an impressive 11 catches, setting a new franchise record of 265 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Also, he achieved a notable feat by becoming only the second player in NFL history to record a 200-yard receiving game for three teams: the Raiders, Cowboys, and Browns. He joins Terrell Owens, who had 200-yard outings with the 49ers, Cowboys and Bengals.

Stefanski is in the running for coach of the year, while Schwartz is a contender for assistant coach of the year. However, Schwartz is driving a Cadillac with the defense he is working with. The way Stefanski has addressed the missing components on offense is imposing. He has managed to make it function effectively even in the absence of Deshaun Watson and Nick Chubb, who is regarded as one of the top running backs in football. Had any general manager in the league believed that Joe Flacco could perform as well as he currently is, they would have signed him at the beginning of last offseason. However, he is a strong candidate for the Comeback Player of the Year.

The Lions clinched the NFC North for their first division title since 1993

The Detroit Lions are celebrating as if it were 1993. After 30 years, the franchise has finally won its division by defeating the Minnesota Vikings with a 30-24 victory, securing the NFC North title.

Against a relentless blitzing defense, Goff’s performance was vital in the team’s triumph. Goff’s underwhelming showing against Brian Flores’ defense while playing for the Rams contributed to his departure from Los Angeles. He showed calm and assurance, completing 75% of his passes and keeping the offense in sync. Goff proved his ability to excel against a solid defensive team, indicating a level of maturity. The Lions have done what is necessary to be recognized as legitimate contenders. They may be weaker than the 49ers or Eagles, but their offense makes them a threat against any opponent.

There’s something about the Detroit Lions that I just can’t put my finger on. In one week, they experienced bullying from the Bears, but the following week, they completely dominated the Broncos in all aspects of the game. They are undoubtedly skilled, but there is an element with this team that makes it difficult to have complete faith in them. Perhaps it’s how the Packers defeated them and had difficulty securing a win against the Vikings. It could be because they suffered a significant defeat against the Ravens, a fate shared by most teams in the league. Once more, they are a strong team. However, I don’t believe they pose a threat to the 49ers. They will probably need help against the strong defense of the Cowboys. If the Eagles regain their confidence, Detroit will not surpass them either. It is a remarkable achievement to win a division for just the ninth occasion in the franchise’s 93-year history. However, they are not legitimate contenders to win the NFC.

The Chiefs are a broken team

It’s looking increasingly like the curse of being the reigning Super Bowl winners will be extended another year. Since the 2004 New England Patriots, no team has been able to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The 2022 champion Kansas City Chiefs are teetering on the edge of not belonging in the Super Bowl conversation.

And the situation could deteriorate. After losing three consecutive games at the prestigious Arrowhead Stadium, there are no guarantees for their upcoming game at home against the desperate Cincinnati Bengals or their subsequent away game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The competition for the AFC West title is still wide open.

Hey, let’s not underestimate the Chiefs just yet. Despite their current state of being broken, Mahomes’ wizardry, Reid’s legendary coaching, and the team’s abundance of talent and experience could propel them to make a surprising run to Super Bowl LVIII in January. The team has become negligent, lacking concentration, prone to mistakes, and showing signs of apathy. Once again, the Chiefs faced familiar issues in this loss, which have persisted since the beginning of the season. Perhaps it cannot be fixed.

This isn’t their year.

The Eagles do not look like a Super Bowl team

Teams vying for the Super Bowl rarely have the luxury of enduring a four-game losing streak during December. Few people can afford three-game winning streaks, but the Philadelphia Eagles have proven themselves worthy of some trust in the past few seasons.

Regardless, it was critical that Philly found a way to beat a bad team at home by a narrow margin on Monday, despite a Jalen Hurts pick-six, a fumble on a kickoff return leading almost directly to a New York Giants touchdown, and nine penalties to New York’s three.

Like Dallas, their division rival, and the Chiefs mentioned earlier, the Eagles commit numerous ill-timed errors. They haven’t won a game convincingly in over two months, and their next real challenge will come in the playoffs, with games against Arizona and the Giants on the horizon.

They’ve got to figure out quite a bit between now and then. Otherwise, they won’t stand a chance against the San Francisco 49ers—if they even survive to meet the presumed NFC top seed.

The NFL playoff battles are as unpredictable and chaotic as ever, ensuring that the final stretch of the season will be unforgettable. As Week 15 began, the AFC had 11 teams with winning records and an additional six teams with a 7-6 record, marking the most teams with that record in a single conference since 1970.

What has just taken place? What is the meaning of it? As each conference's seven-team bracket starts to take shape, what are the key factors and potential tiebreakers that come into play? Everything will be clarified and examined until the postseason teams are determined on Sunday night, January 7th.

Let's take a look at how the AFC and NFC playoff races are developing after Week 15.

The AFC Outlook

There were six teams last week that had the same 7-6 record. Week 15 saw only four clubs secure wins.

Despite not having C.J. Stroud, the Texans defeated the low-ranked Tennessee Titans on Sunday after a full 60 minutes of regular play and overtime. If you're in Houston, you'll need to keep your fingers crossed Stroud will be available for Week 16 against the formidable Browns defense.

No one wants to face the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs. Buffalo narrowly won against the Chiefs in Week 14 but made a considerable impact by dominating the red-hot Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The Bills could use some help to make it into the playoffs, but if they do, watch out.

There is no doubt that the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos were the biggest losers this weekend. The Steelers, who have been unable to reach the 20-point mark in a game for the past five weeks, are dealing with a complete collapse after their third consecutive defeat against the Colts on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions dominated the Broncos with a final score of 42-17. They are fortunate that their next three opponents - Patriots, Chargers, Raiders - have a combined record of 14-28.

AFC playoff picture

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens locked in a playoff spot by defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday Night Football. However, the Ravens have their sights set on a bigger goal, as they are currently in a sound position to secure a first-round bye. In the meantime, the Jaguars find themselves with a record that matches both the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans, but they have tiebreakers over their division rivals.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami team started Week 15 holding the second spot in the AFC, and they will maintain that position because of the Ravens' victory on Sunday night. If the Dolphins can win all their remaining games, including the one against the Ravens in Week 17, they will secure the top seed.

Kansas City Chiefs

Although it wasn't a pretty game, the Chiefs were able to get back to winning when they faced the Patriots. Despite two interceptions, the Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, emerged victorious. After defeating the Patriots, the Chiefs now have a two-game lead over the Broncos in the AFC West. The team holds the third seed, trailing the Ravens by two games for the first position.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Despite the loss, the Jaguars maintain their position as the No. 4 seed in the AFC. Even though they are tied for first place in the AFC South, the Jaguars hold the advantage in head-to-head matchups against the Texans and Colts.

Cleveland Browns

It's another victory for Joe Flacco. Despite the Chicago Bears appearing to dominate for three quarters, the Cleveland Browns, led by the impressive performance of Flacco, rallied in the final quarter to maintain their position as the top wild-card team in the AFC.

Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati, we're glad to see you again. No Joe Burrow? No problem. Thanks to Jake Browning, the former undrafted quarterback who has won his last three games, the Bengals are now in contention for the playoffs. Nonetheless, after their upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Browning and the Bengals will wrap up their season with matches the Chiefs and Browns.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts currently hold the seventh seed in the AFC and have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Houston Texans, who are in eighth place, for the last playoff spot. Cincinnati holds the tiebreaker over Indianapolis in their head-to-head competition for the No. 6 seed.

The NFC Outlook

The Eagles' defeat against Seattle resulted in Philadelphia sliding down to the fifth spot in the conference, while the Cowboys moved back up to second place. The Seahawks are now part of a group that includes the Rams, Vikings, and Saints, all of whom have a 7-7 record. However, the Vikings and Rams still hold the sixth and seventh positions, respectively. According to the tiebreaker process, the initial pairing is between the two NFC West teams, and the Rams eliminate the Seahawks because they swept the season series against them.

The upcoming game on Thursday between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints has the potential to greatly impact the wild-card battle.

The Saints would face a challenging task after falling one game behind in the race for the final spot, while the Rams could create some distance with a victory and the Seattle Seahawks losing. New Orleans could turn the tables on Los Angeles if it leaves SoFi Stadium with a victory.

With tough games ahead for the Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Jacksonville Jaguars), and Atlanta Falcons (Indianapolis Colts), it's unlikely that the three-team competition in the NFC South will change significantly by Monday.

NFC Playoff Picture

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers continued their usual business and secured the NFC West title for the second consecutive year, dominating the Arizona Cardinals. In terms of head-to-head matchups, the 49ers hold the advantage over the Eagles, and they also have a one-game lead and tiebreaker over the Cowboys for the number one seed.

Dallas Cowboys  

Following the Eagles' loss to the Seahawks, the Cowboys have reclaimed the second seed (thanks to their stronger division record as the tiebreaker). Dallas earned a spot in the playoffs because the Falcons and Packers lost, while the Lions won on Saturday.

Detroit Lions

The Lions have won three more games than the Vikings in the NFC North and currently hold the No. 3 seed in the conference. The top spot in the conference is within their reach, as they are only one game behind the 49ers in the standings.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Despite facing tough competition from the Packers, the Buccaneers managed to secure a victory on Sunday, allowing them to maintain their leading position in the NFC South. The tiebreaker that gives them the advantage over the Saints is based on their head-to-head record.

Philadelphia Eagles

The victory of the 49ers on Sunday ensured that Philadelphia would clinch a playoff spot. By virtue of their defeat to the Seahawks, the Eagles relinquished their control over the NFC East. If they are able to win all of their remaining games, they still have a chance to win the division through a tiebreaker. On Sunday, they secured a spot in the playoffs because of the 49ers winning and both the Falcons and Packers losing.

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are desperately holding onto their playoff position. Despite squandering a 17-3 advantage in a defeat to the Bengals last Saturday, Minnesota still has two games left against the Lions, who currently top the division. Before Week 15, the Vikings occupied the sixth seed in the conference, but their defeat moved them into the group of NFC teams with seven losses. They have the tiebreaker advantage over the Rams and Saints in conference records for the 6th seed.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams, led by Sean McVay, secured the last wild-card spot by defeating the Washington Commanders. L.A. has now won four of its last five with its only defeat being an overtime loss to the Ravens. The Rams' chances of making the playoffs would greatly benefit from another win next week, especially against the 7-7 New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints are currently tied for first place in the NFC South after defeating the Giants in Week 15; however, they lose the tiebreaker because the Buccaneers defeated them in their direct matchup. New Orleans takes the No. 9 seed, missing out on the tiebreaker to Minnesota, Los Angeles, and Seattle based on conference record.

Seattle Seahawks

Despite winning on Monday night, the Seahawks didn't secure a wild-card spot, but they remained on par with their competitors. Following their victory over the Eagles on Monday night, the Seahawks now hold the eighth seed in the NFC. They hold the No. 8 position because of their superior conference record compared to the Saints. The Rams have the advantage in head-to-head matchups for the No. 7 spot.
